Just completing a major trek through the NT including east Arnhemland, the Gulf roads and back through NW Qld fossicking areas when we experienced quite a serious wiring melt down in the vehicle bringing our homeward journey to a sudden halt. Luckily we were only 13 kms out of town and a phone call to RACV in Vic resulted in a relatively quick retrieval by RACQ, less than 24 hrs later an assessment that the problem would take at least 7 days to fix in this location.
A second phone call (with some fine tuning) resulted in :- 2 nights accommodation in a self contained cabin at the local caravan
park, arrangements for the vehicle to be trucked home to my nominated repairer, and three connecting plane flights from
Winton (NW Qld) to
Longreach, from there to
Brisbane and then to Melb by 8pm that same night.
Great service from RACV Total Care (cost about $130 pa). In this case I figure that to be good insurance and recommend that travelers take a good look at this option.
Regards
TOL (Vic).

We used them a couple of times on our trip around oz. All up saved us about $4000. As you say cheap insurance. Glad you made it home ok.

Tol.
Could you please give us an idea as to what the wiring meltdown was, and what was the vehicle?
Just perhaps helpful advise for the rest of us.
Thanks.

Mike.
Driving and turned on the lights when the cabin of the 2001 Landcruiser tray and slideon (169000 kms) filled with pungent smoke. Appears that a wire to the light in the bull bar had rubbed and caused a short. The relevant fuse melted but didnot break the circuit and this led to the wiring lume to fuse together quite badly.
Probably one in a million chances of it happening this way, but goes to show regular checking of wiring essential.
regards.

RACV Total Care, gets my vote also
One phone call got me a ride in a towtruck back from '
the Pinnacles' back to
Perth, probably about 300 klms and accommodation.
Then when my timing belt snapped another phone call got me trucked back home once again.
Definitely good insurance and has paid for it's self.
