Bought portable hybrid Versa-Lite - now what battery to buy?

Hi all,

Was hoping to hear what your recommendations are for buying a battery to go with the portable 12v & 240v Versa-Lite (hybrid) I just bought for camping.

Versa-Lite Hybrid

The average days we go camping is roughly 5 days.

Which brand battery should we look at and how many amp battery we should buy?
Will mostly only use for the light.
18amp or a bit more best?

We are new to all this.

Hope to hear your thoughts before buying it this week before camping soon.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you

Timmy

I took one away on the Canning Stock Route and the Simpson this year. Plugged it into one of the vehicle sockets. Did not need a separate battery. Sometimes it was drawing from the starter battery and sometimes from the dual battery. Did not use enough power for battery discharge to be an issue. Your mileage may vary

I have a mix of cigarette lighter type sockets and Hella type sockets. I Like the way the Hybrid can plug into both. Found the optional magnetic holder great.

My guess is it might draw about 4 amp hours per night when using it for about 4 hours each night. If you are not recharging at all you may be up for 20 amp hours so a battery of about 40 amp hours would do. Best not to take battery much past the halfway point.

These lights draw around 1 Amp which if used for 4 hours a night would consume 4AH. Over 5 days this would be 20AH which is not a huge amount in the scheme of things. I run my versalite seperately with a 36AH Exide Extreme AGM originally and more recently a Fullriver AGM DC35-12A. This would allow me to use the light over 5 nights and drain the battery to around 50%.

Any battery above this size would allow for extra 12V accessories if required, though will add weight, size and a small additional cost to the purchase.

If you have another battery for fridges etc, i would look at running it off of that as a first option as you would normally have the spare capacity to add the light without too much impact.

Hope that helps,
Andrew

Timmy,
nice looking light set-up

for a 12v battery get a sealed 10 ah battery (~$39) and you will have no hassles, you can then use it as a stand alone light away from the vehicle (fishing) if required.

If you use an Anderson plug (as shown) glued to the battery, you can swap plugs and recharge the 10ah battery by connecting with your duel battery system (where I leave mine connected 24/7 when not in the boat)

I use this sealed 10ah battery with my boats fishfinder/gps.
It's contained in a plastic 3Lt milk container, with the lead coming out through the bottle's handle to the round screw-on lid.

Yes, if you reconnect the 10ah battery to the Aux battery system as I've stated.
The 10ah battery will last indefinitely while the Aux battery system is realistically charged above the voltage of the 10ah battery.

In the 5 days I'm sure the vehicle will be used during the day, this will recharge the entire battery system including the 10ah battery too.

Too many assumptions of the OP's situation for my liking. :)

I didn't think a battery charges all that well from <13.2V power source? Happy to be corrected on this information.

Andrew,
my only assumptions are the light will draw ~1ah, and will be used ~4 hours per night.

I then assume the OP will do as I said, and connect the 10ah battery to the Aux battery system each morning.
The voltage will then equalize in all the batteries wired together, I would expect the small 10ah battery to accept charge from a ~100ah system quickly.

I would expect the vehicle may be driven somewhere, maybe to go fishing, sightseeing or similar, or even just to recharge the Aux battery system which I would think runs a fridge and it would need recharging anyway.

If the OP believes 10ah capacity is too small he can always get a larger sealed battery.

I often run my fishfinder/gps for more than 5 hours daily from the 10ah battery and it sometimes runs 2 x days before getting a recharge, it uses "10w @ 12v"

Remember, during the day when not in use and not connected, the voltage will 'return' slightly due to recombination of the battery acids.
In other words, when actually using the light the battery may go down to 12.1v (example only) just prior to the light being disconnected that evening, next morning the battery voltage would be higher than 12.1v

Don't forget the more important assumptions that they indeed have an aux battery system, together with the assumption that they will use the vehicle in that time.

Mainey's battery looks like the common 7Ah gel cell. I use one of these for camplight and running the occasional shower. In practice its good for about 3 nights running a fluoro (you don't need it for 4 hours - usually turnit off after dinner and then the stars and moon do the rest.

They won't recharge unless hooked into the vehicle's electrics and the vehicle is running.

Thank you to all of your replies. Its a great place to learn some new opinion/info here ....

Mainey - I like the idea of your set up. What brand battery suits for me? There are too many brands out there and I have no idea which is which. One other thing is if I want to charge the battery, what battery charger should I be looking at to charge it at home as it is the likely place where I will charge it.
CTEK are supposed to be the best charger out.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Cheers!

Central Coast Timmy,
You need a *fully sealed* battery with battery posts that are suitable for your use, as I'm not home at the moment I can't go out look at my battery 'brand' but if you go to a specialist battery store I'm sure you will find they have a reasonable range of 10ah to 15ah sealed batteries.

I only use a (14 year old) Projecta Tradesman 6 Amp charger with a "BM140" switchable lead acid/gel, Charge controller hard wired to it so it can remain connected 24/7 if required, all up probably about worth <$150, however Ctek would probably be a better charger technically, everyone using them will be able to tell you why :-)

I've only used my Projector charger with other peoples batteries, because I've never had a low or flat battery, as they are all charged and maintained by the Solar system.

Timmy,
These are some photos I've found of my fish-finder's 12v, 10 amp battery and it's milk container 'home'
Anderson plug is glued to top of battery with 'Araldite'
