I have been looking at articles on the Jackaroo oil problems as I have just purchased a 2000 U8 LWB with the 3 ltr 4XJI turbo engine. When I got it home the oil pressure gauge was at zero so I drained the oil which was as black as black and replaced both filters and used 10W30 semi. Now the gauge comes up to 400 cold, 200 hot and zero on idle. What I noticed was that the needle on the gauge does not sit on zero when the engine is off but is down near the PA part of KPA. Cud someone tell me if the needle is out of place and shud be at O. Thanx Logavatu

Hi
If you don't know how to do it ,get someone who knows to put a slave gauge on and check the real pressure.
I hope the results are pleasant. Gauges can be out.

Another thing to check is the connections on the pressure sender are clean and the main earths for the engine are also clean.
The guage is electrical.

Thanks guys, already thought about another gauge to verify pressure and with the 5W30 never gets below 6 here. My main question is about the needle itself. Should it be on the Zero or has it moved on the spindle as it now settles 1.5 cm below the O. I guess if someone could wander out to their jacky and have a look at their gauge it will answer that and I can then move the needle.

I believe you should use 5W30 grade of oil in the 4jx1 motor, more info

I had one for 8 years - the oil grade depends on your ambient temperature range - I used 10w-40 in moderate climate ranges without issue - on a frosty morning though, it could be dicy re starting (my 09 SE only had the one 77cca battery though) - but while travelling, who is going to change oils as one wanders through varied climates ? Re the guage - I'm quite sure
mine never got anywhere near idle when hot - I used to do my own servicing - I'd have picked that up - seems like your needle's range has just dropped down the scale. Gotta be sure though, one way or another.

I do not know wether this applies to your vehicle or not but some Jackaroos had 2 oil systems,1 for lube system and 1 for injector operation. You need to find a mechanic who is familiar with your engine to help sort out the problem.
good luck Wally

Hi Logavatu
Just went and turned my ignition on, without starting the engine. The needle crosses the 'A' in the 'KPA' when the engine is not going.
I use 5w30 oil, runs at about 450 hot, 200 idling & hot, closer to 600 cold.
Mine has 212k on the motor, so probably down a bit on pressure.
I would be quite concerned about my gauge showing zero at any time.... definately worth checking with another gauge.
Cant guarantee you that my gauge is 100% correct, but it never shows zero when going, and as I have already said, when not going, over the 'A'.
Best of luck, Dave
