Has anyone been there since the rains?

The SA gov't website says they are open to 4WDs and we have a Forester and hope to get in next week. Not sure how feasible this is.

Major washouts on the CP to WC road which would be our preferred route but coming up from Roxby Downs may also be a possibility.

The Forester has reasonable clearance; it has AT tyres so not the best for mud and we'll be towing a camper trailer.

An alternative might be to take the mail truck to WC from CP and stay overnight if there are pub rooms or caravan park cabins ... ?

The purpose is to get to WC to take a flight over Lake Eyre.

Recent experience or advice about alternatives would be welcomed.

The rains left us stranded in Marree for 4 days last week. The roads were almost bone dry but the creeks were high, more than likely that is still the problem. As an example 4 days after the rain some creeks still had 600-900 in them. Loads of planes doing flights from Marree as well.

Thanks Dean.

Sounds ugly.

Lyndhurst to Maree is ATM closed full stop acc to the SA govt website.

Partly it'll be a question of timing.

We were planning to leave Melb on Wed to get to Coober Pedy in 3 days. Then track acc to William CK. We have the option to do some other things in SW NSW for maybe a week and then go across. Reading between the lines, it sounds like that access from the West might need some serious grader work.

Hey no problems Sigmund....we're playing the same waiting game as you. We're due to leave Adelaide in a fortnight and head up to Marree, then onto Birdsville, Windorah and Longreach.

Not just fingers X'd......

Good luck.

I will have to keep my eye on this thread as we are leaving Melbourne Sunday to go to Coober Pedy and were hoping to go to Coward Springs then down through the Flinders Ranges. One of our party though has a caravan which may present as a bit of a problem.

regards

This is what the CP info centre says about the prospect of grading the roads that have been damaged by the rains:

I cannot tell you when the outback roads will be graded as we have to wait till they are all dry. No-one has this answer at this stage. We keep getting rain each week, then sun then rain. So no chance of complete dry for grading.
