Diesel Heater for hot water.
Hi Guys
I am converting a Hino bus to take us on the big lap. Underneath the bus is a diesel heater that I want to convert for instant hot water. I have read some where this is possible. I dont know how they work. There is a fuel line conected to the diesel tank. I am begging for advice on how to set this up. and I also need to conect it up to the house batteries and install switches for operation. The wires are there but have been disconected from the relays that have been taken away. I have taken some pics of it with the side plate off, but am having trouble attaching them.
If anyone can help I will email pics. Many thanks in advance.

Hi swervy,
Don't know what model diesel heater you have, but the two most common on caravans etc are Webasto and Truma from Dometic. The thing is that while these companies make the heater they also make different models that are completely different that act as water heaters. These are also pretty expensive.
Not knowing what you have ,it is hard to give advice.
Consider installing a separate hws on lp gas, it may be a better option. The more things one unit has to do , the more likely it will fail in some area.

Hi swervy
Depends what one you have I have converted one to use as a boiler for crabs/prawns a few years back but it has manual control , Auto control for hot water for use in a motorhome may cost as much as a gas hot water service by the time you get it working and certified if you want email a few picks i'm happy to see if i can help (kev dot h at bigpond dot com)
I'm also working on a Hino hoping to do the big lap also
Cheers Kev

swervy.

Kimberly Kampers have one in their off road campers.
If you can find someone local with a KK and the unit installed you may be able to get some ideas about setup.

regards

Wim

If it is the original heater it likely blasts a heap of hot air into the cabin from beneath the rear seat. You should be able to trace out the ducting to see if this is the case and if that is true, then it would be a major job to get it to heat water.

If it is a water heater than circulates coolant through fan radiators nto heat the cabin then it would be possible to use it as you want. My Webasto heater does just that - heats and stores 29L of fresh water plus preheats the engine plus heats the camper body with a fan-forced radiator.

Your problem will be getting the original specs and instructions and restoring it to working condition
