Hello all
the
snorkel on my 79 series L/C is cracked at the mounting bracket on the guard.
The factory
snorkel is in two pieces. To replace the bottom section is about $170 so I am considering a new
snorkel.
Has anyone replaced the factory
snorkel? It looks straight forward.
Any recommendations on a brand? AirFlow & Safari both seem to do a replacement & they seem to be one piece.
Thanks
David

David,
I have changed the head from the round factory standard to a forward facing scoop by purchasing an Ironman
snorkel head and using two longer bolts with the standard hose type clamp used to secure the head. Works
well and no need to spend a fortune on the 'stainless' insert and head.. Paid $60 for the
snorkel scoop at local Ironman supplier in western suburbs of
Melbourne.
Cheers Mick

The factory
snorkel is just nuts and bolts - dead easy to replace.
My recollection is that the aftermarket snorkels are designed for vehicles which didn't come with a
snorkel - it is not a "replacement" - I think you may have issues trying to fit the aftermarket
snorkel into the hole where the factory
snorkel went. I'm sure ARB at Regency
Park will know.

David,
If you look up the Safari
snorkel Website they are soon too release a
snorkel as replacement for the original system. I had heard it's release date was for September 2010.
Mine is cracked and thinking of purchasing the new system.
cheers

Yeah the aftermarket snorkels wont line up with existing holes. The
snorkel is very easy to pull apart and put back together.
Mine on my 75 series was cracked also, for 10 years. Siliconed it up and it was fine, never leaked
water and it was a bush car that did more deep crossings then i could care to remember. Im talking windscreen height crossings too, year in year out. Only once was there a tiny drop of
water in bottom of air filter housing which collected in the dust bowl/
water catch anyway. No joke, dont be too pedantic about it, all Tojo snorkels will crack if they get used properly.

Hi David
My advice to you would be to keep the
snorkel standard. After I put a chip and 3" exhaust on my 79 series I got talked into putting a Safari
snorkel with stainless insert at a cost of over $200 onto my vehicle. It made no noticable difference to performance and sat 2" higher, when travelling in convoy in dusty conditions it was letting more dust into the air cleaner.
I have since gone back to the factory
snorkel and have been more than happy with its performance.
Regards
Steve

Thanks to all for your input. I have made up an L bracket to strengthen the cracked mount. The Safari
snorkel that is supposed to be a replacement is listed with ARB (SS70HF) but is not available yet. I will have a look at one when they come in.
The Toyota
snorkel definitely needs a good dose of silicon before you could do a
water crossing with it.
