(I've double posted this elsewhere, so apologies in advance!)
Seriously considering the entry level Windsor Rapid with the bunk beds at the front and the pull out double at the back. I now have some very specific questions I'm hoping someone can answer:
- How does the fridge run when the van is in motion? I imagine the gas wouldn't be powering the fridge when in motion.
- How easy is the van to manouver around by hand? For example, getting it into a tight spot for storage?
- How easy is it to get matching walls for the awning?
- Is the
TV antenna worth getting through the dealer or after market?
- The bottom of my street is a narrow-ish 315 degree right hand turn with a bit of a downward incline. No trouble with turning circles for 4WDs and other cars, but would there be any problems with a caravan jacknifing given the slope and turn? I've done it many times with an unbraked 7x4 box trailer, but not sure how this would go with a braked 1600 kg caravan and a Prado/Hilux.
- Has anyone stored a Windsor Rapid poptop in a standard garage?
- Can the van's spare tyre go anywhere other than the A frame and the rear of the caravan? Can't have it at the rear for storage reasons (too long) and would like to have bicycles on the A frame.

I used to have a Windsor so hopefully can answer some of your questions;
- My fridge was a compressor (not gas) so always ran on 12V when in motion. You need a van battery for this, or you can power from your vehicle - but NEVER use gas when in motion.
- I used a ratchet jockey wheel and the van was very easy to manouver around.
- I had a full annexe made after I bought the Windsor, there are plenty of canvas trimmers able to do this.
- Depends on your skill :) You should be able to do this with practise if you can get a box trailer in.
- I used to store
mine inside the garage, had to take the
wheels off and fit 10" mini
wheels to get under the roller door.
- My spare tyre was fitted from the factory under the rear of the chassis. It used the winding mechanism from a Landcruiser spare tyre.
Mine was an off-road model and had more clearance than a standard one to allow for the tyre clearance.
- I fitted a bike rack to the front of my Windsor. Couldn't find one that suited so made it myself. I could fit 4 bikes at a squeeze.

Hi the windsor rapid we have has-
Fridge runs via an aderson plug off 12volt from the car alternator when driving needs to be wired up when getting your brake controller setup. You can run the 12 volt via a pin of your 7 pin plug there are a number of reports of plugs overheating and melting.(Cost about $150 when done at same time as brake controller) You are not supposed to run the fridge on gas when mobile as
the pilot light can be extinguished and leak gas (fire risk)
Manouvering the van by hand can be quite hard, there are wheel trolleys that van
wheels go on so you can move it sideways and cost about $300 a pair I think?? Google or look in the caravan magazines at your library.
The walls for our rapid awning are between $1800 and $2300 depending on configuration as I was looking for a set at the Penrith show 2 weekends ago. We just use a shade wall along the long side as we didnt use the full annex setup unless staying at least 3 nights in our previous van (cost $150 in comparison)
Corner should not be a problem if properly set up (height, weight dist hitch if needed, brake controller)
Fitting in garage will depend on model you buy re length more than height unless you plan on the full van model not poptop and what is standard in this day and age as the last 5 homes we have built all have had different dimmension garages as standard.
If you have your heart set on one foldout go ahead but remember that it will restrict the size of the market if you want to sell' as most people buy the rapid for the interior space and tow size so you end up with less interior and same size tow as beds at each end. Anecdotale evidence on RV Point and Trading Post show a lower resale value for the single bed end vans.( Lower purchase price accepted)
We have TV aerial that clips on to poptop and have not used it yet as we get the girls reading, playing games and doing homework/journals without the usual distractions of home. Will not last for ever but happy to keep going this way for now. Prices avail at caravanspareparts.com.au
