Hi All,

referring to a post made by Hobbo (Dated Jul 8 2010 - Adelaide to Cairns). My family and I are planning such a trip to be made next year. Planned stops will be just for overnight sleeps and driving through the day. We dont plan on stopping to do much sightseeing as we just want to get to Cairns.

O/night stops are:
1 adelaide - hay
2 hay - dubbo
3 dubbo - toowoomba
4 toowoomba - rockhampton
5 rockhampton - cairns

Not sure of anything north or toowoomba (ie fuel/gas stops, road quality, steep decents, truck route) and would kindly like some advice.

I have done a google maps search and alsthough it gives me distance and hours length, the road quality and surroundings can make for a longer drive than stated. I will have maps and also my tomtom although not to be relied upon nor trusted too much. Will be have uhf comms as well.

Vehicle is a 2001 NM Pajero duel fuel, towing a 2001 17' Jayco Freedom single axle.

cheers
Steve

I'd give serious consideration going Adelaide - Broken Hill - Roma - Charters Towers - Cairns if you want an easy drive without too much sightseeing. Will be much quicker as far less towns and cities to go through.

And I'll third that advice.

Going up the back of the dividing range is flatter and roads are okay for towing.

And I also will advise this is the way to go. We did this trip 1 1/2 yrs ago. We took 5 days to get to Cairns. Only driving through the daytime and not pushing it. I enjoyed it and want to go back to see the things we didn't get to see up through there, but our intentions were to just get to Cairns and not sight see on the way.

At the risk of being seen as a smart arse, Jet Star is the fastest and cheapest way to get to Cairns if the journey isn’t important. Hire a car when you get there, unless it is a one way trip of course!

Rocky to Cairns in one day towing would be a FULL day along the Bruce Highway.

I'd be heading inland as well.

Rocky to Cairns in one day is a BIG ask even without a 'van.
