We went with CIL for the first year of cover with our new van in 09 - quite impressed - organised people and very easy to deal with (as opposed to some of the dolts I encountered on the phone at other insurers) - come this year, we gave CIL the flick (SGIC won the business) - CIL wanted a lot more $ than SGIC. The lesson here seems to be - ring around and get the best price for the van and level of contents you want included. Unfortunately, these insurera play games with us; it's no coincidence I'm sure that the first time you insure with a company you get a great price - when renewing, they seem to think they can have a 'lend of you' !

Darian,
I am going to agree and disgree with you
I agree with you on the recommendation for CIL, but will have to disagree with you about your statement "Unfortunately, these insurers play games with us; it's no coincidence I'm sure that the first time you insure with a company you get a great price - when renewing, they seem to think they can have a 'lend of you' !"
I have been with CIL for 4 yrs now and my policy has only gone up by an average of $12 per yr.
So my recommendation is CIL

Hi Vern
Try the Campervan & Motorhome Club insurance, but they will only insure car and van but at a pretty good rate, at least give them a ring.
Cheers

Hi Rick and Vern,
I beieive that CMCA have this deal with CIL. We are with them and got not the cheapest price but things like:
a, Caravan freighted back to manufacturer for repairs
b, Our fares paid for back to manufacturer
c, Accomodation covered while repairs are done.
In the worst case you might have a bingle in
Broome and your van was made in
Brisbane.

Vern,
I will also endorse CIL, very easy to deal with and is another company that you actually "talk to a person" (in Australia) when you ring 24/7.

Our caravan did not even make it home from the showroom before disaster struck (an act of God rather than me!). We had arranged for a cover note with CIL and had not even paid the premium before we lodged the claim. While approval took some time, the van was repaired promptly. Despite a good experience, I would always suggest a phone around each renewal time.

Thanks for all your opinions, I think from the responses and my own investigations that CIL is going to be my preferred option.
