Good evening
Background: The son-in-law and the daughter are on holidays in the south island of New Zealand. After they went through the Christchurch earthquakes I told them to get out of there and drive south for at least 150klms. Which they did driving a hired camper van.
We’ve been in contact almost daily up until they reached the west coast.
Then all contact was lost despite many phone calls from me and messages. This was about the time when a very large storm hit NZ.
I haven’t been able to contact them on either of the mobile phones after many days, which leads me to believe something is wrong.
I know the country very
well after many years of climbing and trekking in the South Island, so I’m very much aware of the objective dangers.
The Christchurch police have been notified of my concerns, but with little detail to give them, I can fully understand their problems.
Tomorrow morning I’ll contact the hire companies and try to get a registration number for the camper van. Then pass the information onto the police.
Is there is anyone on this site who lives in Christchurch or the surrounding area who can give me a bit of local help please?
My contact number is 0409213403
Many thanks

hi
the west coast isnt very heavily populated so phone reception is minimal both heading north and south on the coast until you break back out into more populated areas, may be hard to get them especially if they are on the same phone network. telecom is the best network over there.
when it rains over there it pours and is pretty crap hopefully they are stranded somewhere safe and warm
good luck

Thanks for your input Stu
As I previously said, the country is not unknown to me, and thats a big part of my concern.
Since my post, we've been in contact with the Victorian police seeking advice, and also talking about GPS technology.
Things are not looking good at the moment.
Cheers

Hi
I live in Invercargill. most of the worst of the storm hit the South Coast but there has been some snow inland the last few days.
Some roads were closed for a short time yesterday morning, it usually not long before the contractors get them cleared.
Cell phone reception is limited in a large area's where the
population is low.
As far as I know there has not been any roads closed with flooding.
The radio report has just lsited the road closures Southland Otago area, Most major roads are open but some like the Milford Sound road will be closed again at night due to freezing,
I presume they will be travelling down to Haast and then Wanaka.
Roads in that area seem to be open.
What hire company are they using, there is a lot of campervans on the roads at the moment so I would not be to concerned yet.

I'm a Kiwi (living in OZ) but would suggest that it is a reception issue.
The West Coast - as you are
well aware - is up, down, windy and pretty remote. And with very little populace, mobile reception is pretty poor at the best of times.
With the weather being the way it has, they may have bunkered down awaiting the sun.
Hope all turns out
well

STU, Russnic and Mh
I very much appreciate your posts and advice. They’ve been found and will be back in
Melbourne soon.
As a family we will sit down shortly and discuss a communications strategy so the likely hood of this happening again is minimal. The first thing that comes to mind is a Spot tracker.
At least I'll get some sleep tonight after seven days!
Cheers

Pleased to hear they are OK bluefly. Once a parent, always a parent, and many sleepless nights result.

Hi Bluefly
Pleased to hear it has ended up AOK
I can understand the comms problems when touring. That is why carry 2 cell phones NZ & Aus, a old Sat Phone and an EPIRB as
well. I tell the family if they need to contact me urgently to leave a message on VKS 737 and I will get back as soon as possible. What a great system VKS 737 is, I always make a point of logging in at least once every 24 hrs, my last position is recorded as
well as the next destination.

Just found a site with telecom phone coverage of NZ, it does look limited on the lower west coast...

I hope it all turns out OK mate.
