Yes, this is another diff lock question but with a difference.
I don't want to know about front or rear axle, lokka or lockright or xxx.
Basically I'd like to add some off-road traction to my HZJ75RP Landcruiser. That's the 75 series, 1HZ diesel ute.
So I would like to change the front diff to either a Detroit No Slip locker or a Detroit Truetrac LSD.
I know I will notice no difference driving with the Truetrac and that it will act like on open diff if one wheel is off the ground.
Just to clarify, I am talking off road driving, 4WD, free-wheeling hubs locked.
What difference is there to the steering with a Detroit No Spin ?
One
shop said "you won't be able to steer it" which I believe is simply because they didn't realise the 75 series is part time 4WD and would be used 2WD on bitumen.
One
shop said "no difference just a larger turning circle"
One
shop said "no difference but heavier and less reactive steering".
So what are your experiences with steering effects of a Detroit No Spin on the front axle of a part time 4WD ?
Thanks !
Peter.

Steering is a bit heavier when hubs are locked, still steerable though, I have one both ends so it becomes a bit of a pig at times, but when I was in the SD it was ok, Don't add one to the rear though, they will sheer the 6 axle studs, I have had that happen a few times now , 3 or 4 spot welds fixed that , if your in remote locations and need to pull the axle it's handy to have an Inverter and a angle grinder, I have not had any problems in the front .

Doug, I think you'll find that the dowels on the rear hubs have a miniscule amount of wear after 700,000 + km. When this happens you will sheer the studs.
I ended up fully welding the axles in on a 75 i had and carried a genny, drill grinder and easyouts in it all the time.

Peter
I have a TrueTrack in the front and an Eaton E-locker in the rear of my Series 80 (constant 4wd).
The TrueTrack does make a difference - when taking your foot off the accelerator or initially when accelerating hard - the car tends to momentarily steer to one side or the other. But you get used to it and no dramas.
Wrt acting like an open diff when one wheel is off the ground - a soft touch on the brake pedal solves that issue as power is then transfered to the wheel on the ground. [same technique as used for rear LSDs, although some use the hand brake]
Cheers

Yes I understand the Truetrac LSD is good.
That would be my fallback position if I am convinced the No Slip would do bad things to steering.
So far the No Slip is sounding pretty good however.
Do you know is there is a Truetrac for the rear diff of a 75 series ?
To me that would be the perfect setup - real LSD in the rear (not a pretend Toyota) and a locker in the front.
Cheers,
Peter.

Don't know. There isn't one for the 80 Series, which is amazing because I reckon they would have sold many thousands of them if there had been!

I've had a Detroit No Spin diff lock in the front diff of my 75 series Troopy for about 10 years. It has never been a problem in terms of daily driving usage/handling. But there is a positive difference in its 4wdriving ability. If you're in
Perth I could sell you the whole front diff (my Troopy was in a slight rollover and has been written off).

The positive difference in 4WD ability is indeed what I am after !
I'm in
Melbourne, freight would be a killer.
To me it seems a Detroit No Spin in the front diff of the 75 series is the way to go.
Now if I could only find a place that can install the Detroit and at the same time overhaul the steering knuckles.
At the moment I'm looking at ARB for the knuckles and then Opposite Lock for the Detroit. ARB won't do the Detroit and opposite Lock won't do the knuckles.
