As most of you know we went to the Birdsville Races this year and was rained in along with about 5000 other people. May I commend the organisers at Birdsville for all the hard work they put into keeping the people happy and entertained, every time we went into town there seemed to be some sort of activity going on, even bus pulling in the streets. I have often tried organising different things in country towns and I know how difficult it can be so well done to the Birdsville organisers.
Having said all that, some credit must go to the crowd, given the number that was there and no crime or fights (outside of Fred Brophy's tent of course) that we know of, well done to the crowd. I know there were some disgruntled folk there but they were definitely in the minority.
The only gripe that I had was the advice that were given from the information centre regarding the common and whether we should move to higher ground, (the sky was looking threatening at this stage) we were told that there was no need to move, it would be OK and if it was going to get too wet the Shire would let us know, well within 36hours of that advice we were locked in and couldn't move our vehicles, we walked everywhere and may I say we grew inches taller and had very tired legs from dragging the heavy shoes (in my case thongs as they seemed to be the easiest to wear in those conditions) around, we also had water front living in front of out tent. But for all that we enjoyed out week in Birdsville. The good thing is we had been there a couple of years ago so have seen it both wet and dry.

Just the way I saw it anyway.

Cheers

Good post Deanna!

I'd hate to have to entertain 5000+ racegoers who can't go anywhere for a week! And although personally I wouldn't particularly like being there for the races... too many people... having been stuck in Birdsville late July for 5 days, I can't think of a better place to be stranded! You'd find the "disgruntled" ones would be disgruntled anywhere!!! LOL....

But anyways, good post giving the organizers a pat on the back!!

Cheers

Brian

It certainly isn't a time to whinge anyway Old Girl, you are there, no where to go, what is there to whinge about, it's not going to help. LOL You are right, we did know the weather was coming. We saw some people leave on the Friday morning, I'm not sure how far they got before they were stopped by the roads, we figured it was better being stuck in Birdsville than out on a road on your own.

Cheers

Hi quincy, it was a great week, I guess you are joking about the bread, we got two loaves of just baked bread the morning the roads opened, didn't seem to be a shortage of that. We were very well stocked with everything else, we could have been there for weeks without any problems in the food department. I believe the cigs were running out, not being smokers in out group not sure about that report. A plane did come in with some supplies though.

Cheers
