hi guys and girls just to introduce myself and my family my name is Damien jilley my wife peta-marie .We were , are about to embark on a trip of a lifetime around aust for a couple of years working our way around ,due to cancer affecting myself we now wont be able to leave till around feb, march 2011 not that this is a bad thing as given us more time to prepare... We have 3 kids twin boys and a little girl all very excited to say the least .. We have sold the family home and are trying to decide whether a van or a bus would suit better i seem to be leaning towards a van as then we are able to pack into the 4wd and see other
places a bit of the beaten track .. I have done the
Gibb river road and
Kalumburu, pago station
broome and most of the west coast not that i will
mine doing it again as it was a blast the first times.
Any tips greatly appreciated.
see ya all out there or maybe not ...

Hi yu Damien Jilley and Family,
Firstly can i say how sorry we are to hear about your illness.
Secondly, welcome to ExplorOz as a member, you can always ask a question, or make a statement, and you will always get an answer, sometimes maybe not what you want to hear as there are some stirrers on this site, LOL.
We don't have
young children (we are
Grey Nomads) but if we did we would go for a van, as you have stated you can
park the van and use the 4X4 to travel where you don't want to take the van.
If travelling around for a couple of years don't forget Tassie, and you will need at least 2 to 3 months.
Get
well soon and enjoy your travels.
Cheers
Baz

Hi Damien,
We ONLY did 6 months in 2008 with our 2 kids, felt a lot longer than that and loved it. My wife put together a website of the trip with a blog and pics, trip preparation etc. See below. Feel free to email any questions.
Cheers,
Mark.

Hi Damien & Peta-Marie, welcome to EO. Sorry to hear of your illness Damien, hope you get over it soon. I, like the others, would prefer the van. We had four children and found holidays in the van were memories that they still talk about.
Good luck with it all and travel safe.
Cheers
Deanna

Welcome ,
Damian,Peta-Marie,
Just a thought, whilst you at present are able to pull and
park a van,Think of Peta-Marie,if for some reason you fall sick and are unable to drive, the combination you ?have or are thinking about getting. If you good lady has never towed before please think of doing one of the many towing courses, available.
I wish you and your family all the best, enjoy yourselves, take your time.Your children will enjoy this time together and be forever talking about there trip of a life time .
Cheers
Ann.D

Good luck with your planning but to be honest you have alleady made the big decission, and thats, to do it.
The rest ,will be easy.
My wife was very ill when weset off and a lot of my friends told me straight ,we were mad. Some where in the middle of SA, she felt she no longer wanted to take her meds and 18 months on ,she is still very
well.
No need to she her quack for a year. yeppee.
What ever you do, it will be the right thing. Only advise ,keep it light and easy and remember, the idea is to enjoy oz and the family.
cheers col
