Most service stops have the rudest backpackers employed & a pomy girl at the archer road house is the rudest by far. its Hot but the crowds are not here, only once have we had to wait to cross & that was at canal
creek & we just took a harder option thanks to diff locks
Gun Shot
creek not to bad going north, our 6wheeler a bit long (7.5 mtrs) but got thru ok yesterday, logan
creek is quite deep
well over the bonnet of the patrol today, but it made it, some have had problems with fans sucking in to the radiators on this crossing

Vince,
it is a pity "Toots" Holzimer is not still around "god rest her soul"
She would have sorted out the girl at Archer River very quickly, I know she gave me a couple of serves over the years and on one occasion I hadn't done anything at all. Must admit on another trip we did chew up HER ROAD a wee bit, hooking 2 prime movers together to get through the dips.
Have a good one.

If it was the same
young lass when we were there in July, she was the friendliest employee we met. The kids helped her pull a poster off the front counter and she thanked them, and offered a lollipop as a reward. She spent some time talking to them as she was doing her opening chores which was nice of her.
It's a shame to come across bad service but unfortunately in these remote tourist areas, good help can come and go just as quick as the tourists do.

What irks me most is that so many outback pubs now employ backpackers as cheap bar staff.
Usually
young, female, a pommy/irish/scottish accent you cant understand but worse than that they pretty much without exception can't pull a decent beer.
We really enjoy calling in at outback pubs, check out local conditions, have a yarn and most important find out how the fishing is.
Thing of the past. Bah Humbug!

Mike,
What would irk me most would be: No one there to pull any sort of beer, decent or otherwise.
Imho it's only the backpackers who will go to some of these outback pubs to work, they are enjoying a totally different experience, while the Australian workers can't stand being out in a remote area without all home comforts, (nightclubs and bars, fancy coffee
places, 27thousand TV channels to choose from, and of course the obligatory boutiques and shoe shops.)
Most backpackers that I've met have been very friendly and helpful, and thoroughly enjoying their experiences in Oz.
Disco.

Interesting point to raise about back-packers pulling beers in outback pubs. The problem is that there is no-one else about to do it. I spoke to the owner of a couple of pubs recently and they said they can’t find locals as they are all employed.
Back-packers actually get a visa extension if they work in remote areas, hence the reason why you see so many doing it.
Cheers, and beers...The Landy

Sorry Vince
In July we met only polite and happy backpacker staff from
Lakeland to Thursday Is. Some may be novices at pulling beers or providing professional table service, but they seemed to be enjoying it and it's great that they get out into the bush. I've no doubt that the roadhouse managers/owners get rid of any duds pretty quickly.
Keep smiling, as you indicate, there is much more to the
Cape York experience than worrying about the service in roadhouses.
Cheers
John

Disco Driver,
Ithink you are exactly right, Ihave travelled a fair bit in the outback and it is usually the European backpackers that keep the remote pubs alive and I have NEVER met a rude or unfriendly one.As said it seems the the locals are not interested in living in the outback situation.Ask the publicans and you will find they can't do without them.

Hey Vince do you know what I like about these back packer working in the out back????
They are out there having a ball, traveling, working and doing what most
young Aussie kid wouldn't dare try.
I have come across many of back packers working the out back, I employ them to and trust me I pay the above award wages with the trimmings, I even married one, having employed,
young so called having a crack at it Aussies they don't come close to scratch, compared to a hard working back packer.
Unfortunately they have to deal with twats that are rude people, with an attitude it's all about me and if I don't get what I want now, I will just give you grief because you probable wont be here next week any way.
By the looks of your post and you read between the lines, It reads to me that the only person with no regard to any one else was you.
Hard working back packers keep the out back open for business.

Mate I was NOT the Rude one
I have travelled all over oz & I agree most are great & friendly & doing a great job that others will not, I think if they do a job in remote areas it should count like if they work on farms & let them extend there visa so they can see more of this country but it doesn't
But on this trip not all, but most have been just over it. so after a reply like yours i hope you never need a tow or a winch from us

Never met a rude one up there on our several trips up the Cape.
All the ones we came across were great girls having a good time, sure some of them have a hard time with the Aussie lingo but that's half the fun.
They work a darn site harder than most Aussie girls from the city would.
Perhaps it's just your attitude Vince.

Just to be fair.. isnt it possible that Vince did encounter a rude backpacker? theyre just people after all and no one likes to be served by someone with a bad attitude.
and in defence of
young australians, at 22 I headed out to somewhere completely remote to work and try something new and Id like to think served people in a happy friendly way. I satyed for a couple of years, met my husband and never went
home. during the time I was there both australian and backpackers came through to work and all had a great time.
its not where youre from that makes you a good or bad worker or gives you a sense of adventure. Maybe the aussie kids are off overseas on their own adventures?

Just seems that no one else has encountered the problem.

Chipsy,
I don't believe anyone is saying that he didn't have a negative experience, as we all know that this can happen in any business, in any location, at any time. :) Maybe we all have focused too much on this one minor statement and haven't taken note of the rest of his trip details to the same extent.
You make a good point about our youngsters heading off overseas in their own adventures, probably experiencing similiar situations to those backpacking and working their way around our country.
