Robin Miller (member here) put me on to Maxis Big Horns sometime back because he was running a set at the time.

Being a bit short of cash, I had them installed, and waited to see what would happen because they are a damn site cheaper than the popular brands.

Being a full mud tyre they can become very loud on some bitumen roads but you get use to it after a while. I was fully expecting them to be hopeless on the hard top, but it turns out I was wrong.

In the bush they are very good. We’ve crossed Scoria plains, stake country, rough bush, and just about everything else. Not one chip off the tyre or anything else.

Have to say I’m impressed for the price. They are certainly better than Coopers in rough country.

Unlike many others, I run my pressures at 35PSI unless in sand or mud. This seems to do me well. I’m not an exponent of how many miles you get out of a tyre. It’s the work they do in the long run that matters.

Cheers

Sounds like a happy customer Bluefly - what size did you buy and for what car !

Still run a 255/85/16 set here on a manual petrol Patrol , not sure if my new car which will be auto can pull them though.

I keep mine up high to help reduce noise - which I don't find any worse than my MTR's.

I have Maxxis Bighorns on too, the second set on the Landcruiser and have more on the Karavan. They seem to do a good job with another 20,000kms left when I took them off at 55,000kms for the first set.

People do know you are coming with a bit of a howl. Unlike bluefly, I have had some torn rubber, but they do get on some gibber country and stone and clay tracks. The current set has about 20,000 kms already since June but am rotating with the spare this time.
