Hi all,

was hoping to replace my petrol 100 series with a new turbo diesel shortly (not necessarily a cruiser) but looks like the budget wont quite allow me to get what i really want .

So my question is , What mods would i be best to spend about 10K on the cruiser if i was to keep the old girl a while longer.

I've heard fitting free wheeling hubs helps greatly with fuel economy. is this really worth the expense??

wish list would be something like lift kit, dual spare/jerry-can carrier, racks, draws, maybe a set of headers ?!? or can i get a power chip for it

I know i'll get countless suggestions of "Petrols are no good" and " Just get the TD" But its really only been the wifes daily driver up until now so its in quite good nick ..

Got some cash to burn have you - invest it instead of wasting it on a car :-) Then if you invest well you'll be able to afford the TD sooner!

Mate most things related to improved fuel economy will only be cost effective over many kilometres. I imagine very few people would recover the costs during their ownership. I just spent a few $ on headers and better exhaust for the V8 100 series and fuel economy has certainly improved. But I doubt I'll recover the cost before selling it. However there were other benefits such as better response and nice noise that can't be given a dollar value.

Ignore the 'petrol are crap' mob on here.

If I were you (and HAD to spend the cash) I'd be getting stuff that will enhance whatever you do with it. If that happens to be that the missus continues to use it as a general commute vehicle don't spend anything - no point. On the other hand if you intend to tour then stuff like drawers would be handy.

Lift kit not really necessary unless you want to get into some action off road.

Dual spare carrier - only if you'd be doing lots of touring. Racks - similar.

I hope you see where I'm coming from - don't spend it pointlessly. Probably will not increase the selling price by much.

There will be alot of touring coming up next year.

the wife will be getting something a bit more practical for getting groceries and dropping the kids at school .. so yes ill be getting the cruiser and using it more for its intended purpose ...( i currently have a 84 diesel dualcab hilux that finds its way off road atleast once a week)

im thinking headers might be the first thing along with some new rubber..

i get 12 weeks long service this time next year so there is a trip up to the pilbara and gascoiyne towing an off road camper so the suspension work will probably be a good idea also...

the fuel economy isnt such an issue for me as i find its really only terrible driving around town.. (especially the way the wife drives it )...im looking for better performance/power..

What about an LPG convertion. Did it to my 100 series and never looked back. Saves heaps of $$ of fuel. You will lose your sub tank however.

Because I lost the sub tank I replaced the 90L main tank with a new 140L main tank. Cost around $1200 to buy and fit.

It's been years since I did the convertion to LPG so don't know what that would cost these days

This... The current cost is around $4000 for the SVI system. DO NOT consider saving some money and getting the cheaper mixer system. The rebate is $1500 at the moment and drops to $1250 next July.

My 4by uses 20lt Petrol per hundred (33" muddies, lift, bars etc) and 23lt on LPG.

20lt ULP @ $1.20 = $24 per hundred kms
23lt LPG @ $0.47 = $11 per hundred kms

so at these prices you are looking at about 20000kms to 'pay back' the cost and then you are saving money.

I'll be saving after 6 months :) and walking in to pay for gas at around $30 is a joy to do.

The SVI systems are so close to petrol in power levels most wont tell the difference and are totaly automatic.

This should be the first mod if you are going to keep it for a while

met some guy a few weeks ago but can't remember much of the details but it was something about putting a holden v8 into the cruisers and getting some amazing fuel economy, supposedly better than the TD,

I can not see how a very old tech pushrod(late 60s) v8 would even do the same economy as the dohc 24 valve 4.5 which puts out similar power anyway, now if you are talking about the superb dohc lexus motor that is a diff mater, but even it will never match the td.

Not sure on the story mate as I wasn't real interested as I already have a 4.2 TD.
Guy was talking about one of the EFI engines , he was a mechanic and had just recently done a conversion to an 80 series and was keen to convert his as it apparently made a big difference.

Luke,

Don't waste your dough on FW hubs, they don't make a scrap of difference.

Headers, yes, they improve efficiency significantly.

Lift kit, talk to Ironman, their stuff is good and good value.

Petrols are great, but you pay a smidge more for the performance. An injected LPG conversion would be a great thing to do; Petrol power and lower running costs than a diesel.

If you need drawers, give me a call, I'll save you $1300.

Cheers,

Jim.
