Hi all..
I have seen a Landcruiser which I need some advice on. I am NEW to this so be nice :)
There is a 2001 TOYOTA LANDCRUISER GXL 8 seater wagon for sale $29,000 in
Adelaide . Two batteries..plus an Anderson Plug already fitted which when we end up purchasing a van we will need. The car has new Mickey Thompsons tyres all round (spare tyre also) and paint work is in very good condition as too with the interior. Still has the rear kiddie seats in it..
Only done 108,000 k's which I thought was pretty good for the cars age.. Engine is 6 cylinder Unleaded Multi-point injected 4.5L Auto...Has a fairly hefty looking Alum. bullbar and sopt lights.
Is this model a good 4 wheel tug to tow a van that will wieght around the 3 ton plus mark ?
Any advice would be helpfull ...
thanks
Terry

I think you will find that fuel economy will be pretty high with the 4.5 petrol especially when towing. I'd personally look for the V8 (4.7l) if looking for a petrol version as they have much better fuel economy.
Cheers Kev

I would have thought that being 6cyld petrol it would be very thirsty and the price is a bit high in my mind I would expect to pay that for a desiel.
But would make a good tow vehicle
cheers reggy2

I thought after 2000 the only petrol the cruiser had was the v8?
29k would be far too much for a vehicle that age running the old 6
they were good in their day , but you wouldnt pay premium $$ for a vehicle running a 20 year old donk

Hi Terry (chasekill),
I am currently looking also and have found one on Ebay or perhaps carsales.com.au and it is in
Adelaide. Too far away for me here near Port Macquarie NSW but should be perfect for you and it is way less than you are looking at. Round the $20,000 mark. It has an ARB bull bar and I cannot recall if it was on gas or not.
I had a friend who had both a V8 cruiser and a 4.5 litre 6 petrol cruiser at the same time. She said that the V8 was a little more economical on long runs but the 6cyl was a little better around town. I have had a 4.5 petrol on gas and loved that vehicle (97, 80 series). Gas realy makes either the V8 or the 6cyl affordable to run. And you will recoup the installation price over time.
Either way the 100 series are the vehicles to tow with and have a tow limit of 3.5 tonne.
I now own a 96 80 series factory turbo diesel which also goes very
well but the turbo diesels are too dear both to buy and to own long term as cost of ownership is high, servicing etc.
Get a unit already gassed or have it put on and you will be laughing all the way to the bank. V8 or petrol ?, either will do the job easily but it will come down to your preference.
I have accurate figures for both gas/petrol and diesel fuel consumption and I can tell you it is line ball. If diesel goes any more than a couple of cents above twice the price of gas gas is the clear winner
Cheers, Bruce.

Should have added that the one you are looking at may not be highly priced as you have not noted the year model. Given the low Ks it might be a later model. Does it have a 5 speed auto???. They were only available from mid 2002 onwards and command a higher price.
Bruce.

Yep did it again, didn't read your post properly. You say it is a 2001 model so disregard the followup please..
That is highly priced. Keep looking.

I have found the vehicle I was talking about. It is in Blair Athol at
W.H.R Wholesalers on Main North Road
It is a 98 mode, white, is fitted with a roof rack, 212.000 Ks on the clock and it is already on gas. These Ks are not untypical for this year model.
Looks very clean and they are asking $18,500 or there abouts.
Might be worth a look if you live not too far away.
Please note I have no connection whatever with the car dealer mentioned.
Presented only in the interest of the original post.
Cheers, Bruce.

My mate tows his 2T work trailer every day with his 4.5 100 series. It tows very
well but the 4 speed auto hunts around quite a bit with that load on it. He averages 28L/100km towing, about 20L/100km on the highway. He runs 305/70/16 mud tyres and a 3" lift.
He paid $34,000 3.5yrs ago with about 110,000km. His was also converted into a dualcab by the previous owner from new.
I think $29k is too high for the 4.5, maybe about right for the 4.7 V8.
