I dont know about the 80 series but ours is under the bonnet. My sons was under the passenger seat in his previous car and when it turned on the passenger/handbrake nearly went through the roof.

G'day dingo,
I have an HJ61 Landcruiser [4 litre turbo diesel dual-cab ute] and even though it has factory fitted diff locks, they are cable not air actuated. But I do a fair amount of beach [read soft sand] driving so the tyres regularly need deflating and re-inflating, hence the requirement of a reliable air supply, so I mounted the compressor in the engine bay, [actually on the side of the motor as it is belt driven off the engine] and ran an air line back to the tank [an old out of date BBQ gas cylinder] under they tray behind the rear drivers side wheel for convenience. There is plenty of room in the engine bay for installing an electric air compressor and a reservoir tank can be easily located under the body.
Hope this helps
Welldone
