Hi - anyone have any experience/thoughts on kids doing this walk? Kids are experienced with High Plains walks, but I'm not sure on the gradients up there. Also keen to head out along the Diamantina spur & down to Dibbins Hut, & return to Hotham over three days. Any thoughts?

Should be ok with some common sense - leaving from Hotham rd the track is relativily flat compared to walking up from Harrietville , and track goes around the edge of a couple of the hills,
But its a long few km as track is rough but not bushy and its easy to sprain an ankle on the uneven surface.
As there experienced they would be carrying water , have good shoes , , wear lip balm because of cross winds and be prepared for worst case overnight stay - at this time of year theres snow and its possible even to Xmas.
Biggest problem would be kids running ahead and out of sight and fog rolls in.

There are 3 routes to Feathertop.
1. Bungalow spur track
2. Bon Accord Track
3. Razorback track
I have hiked up to Feathertop via Bungalow spur a few times with an overnight pack on & while its a constant uphill grade its not overly steep.
I have also gone in via
the Razorback from Hotham as
well. You don't have to gain as much height overall compared to Bon Accord or Bungalow Spur going this way but there are a few short sharp ups & downs that are a bit rocky but if your kids are used to the high country it should not be a problem.
As you probably are aware the weather is very unpredictable up there. I struck a blizzard in January on one occasion! If you have good gear though this certainly is not unpleasant. In fact I reckon it's just another reason to visit our beautiful High country no matter what the weather so you get to experience its many moods.
Enjoy!

Diamantina Hut near Hotham to Feathertop should be fine for kids with a bit of experience.
Diamantina Spur down to Blairs Hut on the W Kiewa is steep in parts but at least it's downhill!
From there back up via Dibbins can be a bit of a slog so take some high GI scroggin.
Overall it's an interesting walk with
views, water, history and natural history.
Go for it.
