98 patrol 2.8D

How high can the temp gauge safely go on a hot day before overheating?

Was towing a camper to Karratha. At 12pm the outside temp rose to 40+.
At 90kmh the gauge rose to 2/3 from its usual 1/2. When I slowed down to 80kmh it went back to normal. The coolant has only just been replaced.
Can it work safely at that temp, or do I need to get the radiator rodded?

Also I think the intercooler fan has failed, as it didn't seem to run at all when I checked it. I assume it should operate in conjunction with the thermo electric in front of the radiator.

Would a higher intercooller temp affect the overall temp of the motor and its cooling system?

Dan

Any thoughts

Hi Dan,
At the end of the day it is only a small engine (2.8l, not much larger than an old sigma) pushing a big load in high temps it's gonna warm up.
I'd try a proper gauge to see if it is actually overheating before I would worry too much.

I don't like to say it Dam, but I think there is something wrong with your car mate.
The temp gauge on my 98 2.8 patrol never moved (hopefully the gauge wasn't faulty) regardless of how hot the outside temp was or the load we pulled.
We used to tow a ton & a half or more of quads & camping gear all over NQ through all the seasons flogging the hell out of that gutsy little engine. It would have definitely been in excess of 45 deg at times in the hills around Palmer River & it read the same. 100 k/h on the roads out west in summer didn't effect it either.
Better go & get it checked out by a good mechanic mate. It might save you a lot of money.

Mine was doing this as well.
Did the usual checks...bubbles in radiator n overflow bottle ...compression test...cooling system leakdown test...n nuthin.
So I installed a 3 row steel/copper radiator (new) out of a 4.2 diesel...and replaced clutch fan (also new and genuine....$$$$$) after checking water pump was ok.
Fixed. not sure which process fixed it ...but all good anyway.

HTH.

Cheers Keith

I have the same engine and I have driven it across the usual places that most of the forum people have been (simpson, beach runs etc). I have an after market temp gauge and mine never gets hot. It will go up 10-20 degrees when working real hard but it never get the dash board dial past the half way mark.
I would get it checked. Cheap insurance :),
