Tyre size choice

Hi I own a Toyota 100 series Lancruiser (IFS) which has road tyres 275/70/R16 fitted. I,m looking replace these with muddies. I dont really want to change the rims so my question is am I restricted to useing the same size replacement tyres.

Has anyone done something different?

rare,

Just be aware that changing from 275/70/16 (31") to 285/75/16 (33") will put your speedo out 100kmh indicated will be approximately 106kmh on the road, may be illegal if you are in NSW (VSI 09).

That said I have a road set 31" with AT's and a set for trips 33" with mud tyres.
The GPS keeps the speed correct and it is highly unlikely that you will get pinged for tyre size.

Ok Thanks so the increased tyre size will result in an aprroximate 6% speedo difference. IE: Speedo = 100KLM real speed = 106KLM

Correct.

There is a tyre Tyre Calculator click here and a mass of other great information listed at the bottom of these pages under Asrticle Topics.

Also remember that Mud Tyres tend to be noisey..

Good luck with your tyre choice.

My 100 series with 285/75/R16 only showed a 2% increase.

Depending on how accurate the speedo was originally will vary the result.

Alex,

The 5.1% difference between the 2 tyre sizes is a constant. i.e. 31" and 33" has a different rolling diameter of 5.1%

Speedo's will always vary, so will tyre brands and tyre different tyre pressures.

Not that it matters as long Rare knows that there will be a difference.

Fitting 285's actually corrects the speedo. All car speedo's by law indicate lower than actual speed so the larger tyre diameter (at least on my 105 series) brings it to within 1kmph of that displayed. (Compared with GPS)
What it does put out is your odometer which will indicate less KM's than actually travelled.

Craig,
when i had the D694 tyres, i noticed that when tyres were at about 40%+ wear the gps and speedo matched. About 2% when new

I have my second set of 285 75 16 BFG A/T's on my IFS 100 series, they are a great fit and as mentioned by others they put the speedo out by about 5 k's.
