Flinder Ranges - Wilpena Pound

Hi all,
We're heading out to Wilpena Pound soon and I was wondering which is the better to camp at, Rawnsley Park Station or Wilpena Pound Resort? I know about the camp sites in the national park, but we're going with others that don't have an off road caravan.
Also, can you have a fire at Wilpena and Rawnsley caravan parks?
Regards,
Ray

Image Could Not Be FoundYou can have a fire at Rawnsley Park and dont need anything off road to get in there. Track can be a bit bumpy on the way in but 2wd no problem just slow down. I dont think you can have a fire at the Pound.

We camped at wilpena pound 2 weeks ago and yes you can have a fire, they sell bags of fire wood in the shop for $20.

Enjoy

You do not need an off road van to go to the campground at Wilpena. They have some powered sites.

Hi Ray

Agree with Wendys

We stayed at Wilpena Pound as we wanted to do some of the walks and start out early before it got too hot. Nice campground, and yes others had campfires.

Hi Ray
You will find that it will come down to personal preference, but I personally prefer Wilpena. You have the best of both worlds there with powered sites if you want power, or if you want to camp, you can camp in no set places. As for fires, the only time that you can not have an open fire is during the fire danger season.

The cost of wood is getting dearer to buy and we usually bring some from home, or collect it out of the National Park. This was our last set up at Wilpena, with some of our stockpile of wood for our camp fire.

Where ever you do stay, you will enjoy one of the great places in South Australia and seeing it at its peak after all that rain.

Hi Redbakk
You can buy firewood in small bags, but we take our own wood with us. The two large black bags and the red, white and blue stripe bag was wood that we had carried from Clare and the small pike of wood we collected along the way. Apart from the great camp fire, the smell of the burning Cyprus Pine fire is a very nice smell and one that we always relate to our Flinders camps. Years ago, we always had our favourite camp spot around 5 kilometres north of Wilpena, before it was made into a National Park, where it was true bush camping - those were the days.

We have travelled to many great desert locations around outback Australia, yet the Flinders for me still rates as one of the very best and we never get sick of going there.

Cheers

This was us at Rawnsley last week:

We have stayed at both and prefer Rawnsley for the unpowered area. The powered sites are a little cramped.

Just came home from spending two weeks at Wilpena Pound Campground. Between there and Rawnsley Park it depends on what you are there for. I was there for the bushwalking so Wilpena was preferred as the track system for the Pound starts there. Bitumen roads all the way in to the visitor centre and resort and campground.

As for fires - the Fire Season starts 1 November so no fires after this date - can't say why at this stage it is all so green!!

The only problem at Wilpena was one amenities block had water pump problems, plus as the water is pumped from Wilpena Creek, the recent rain had stirred up a lot of silt which went straight into the plumbing throughout the park.

Hope this helps...
