Permits

I am looking to travel up along the Finke River to Hermansburg next year. Where do I get the permit from and how long does it take to come.

Will also be travelling east to west on the Gibb River road, do I need any permits there.

G'day,

I travelled both of these roads this year and no permit was required for either if staying on the track.

There is a really good info sheet on the Finke below. No trailers or caravans and high clearance 4wd's only.

If travelling off the Gibb River Road to Kalumburu or Mitchell Plateau no permit is required for these either.

A permit is required to visit Kalumburu (or was when we were there)

Spot on Mother Hen. Permit can be purchased on arrival to "visit" rather than to drive there.

Hi Jim
Like above, no permits are required to travel those main tracks. As for the Boggy Hole Track, make sure that you do your homework before hand. We came in from the south and if I had not made prior waypoints for moving maps, it could be easy to miss the turnoff, as it was not signposted.

Cheers

A lovely drive! If you have the time, take a couple of days.

Back in 2004, in the days of the roof top tent, we camped at Illamurta Springs, site of the old Police Station ruins. This is at the southern end of the drive, not far from Ernest Giles Road.

Just love the colours!

Make sure your gear is in good order and check with the friendly guy at the Hermansburg servo before departing on track conditions.

This is what you will be following north of Boggy hole

Great camping at boggy hole

Be very careful if you are traveling north to south when you leave Boggy Hole, iit is very easy to end up on the wrong track, if you end up on a track heading east out through a fence you are on the wrong track, go back and find the correct one heading south, if not you will end up having to go over this.

It's a great track and a beautiful part of the country, enjoy.

Cheers

We traveled along the Finke river from Ernest Giles road to Hermansberg in April this year. It was the best 4wd trip I have ever done. Things were very wet due to all the rain and it took us 5 days to get through, including a few stops to wait for the water level of the river to fall.

My advise is if you are in the area don't miss it. But be prepared it is remote. It could take you 2 days or a week depending on conditions. Take food and water for a week just in case. Make sure you have full recovery equipment.

The scenery, the river, the rock cliffs, old river gums, water holes - just beautiful. And a variety of driving conditions from sand, rocks, mud, water crossings.
