Rodeo 3ltr Common Rail - Replace Filter Warning Light

The Light warning of a fuel filter change required came on the other day. It activated when the motor was under load. I replaced the fuel filter and the warning light still activates.

Anyone know if there are other issues with the fuel delivery/sensors that may trigger this light? I assume there must be sensors near the intake

Please note I took this too a Holden dealer and they did a computer diagnostic, drained the fuel from the filter (but did not replace) and gave it back to me (charged $49.50) saying they could not find anything wrong.

Also any pointers on how to bleed these systems? Going by the book did not work (Turn ignition on 15 sec & then off 5 times - repeat). After replacing the filter I had to turn the motor over and over before the fuel came through. Thought maybe block outlet and fill canister with diesel before screwing back in place?

Any help appreciated - Cheers Tony

There are two lights on the dash, one is the fuel water trap light, the other is the engine fault light.
For water undo the yellow tap under the bonnet on the lh side on the firewall and turn the ignition on and off like you did. Had the car stalled or anything like that(e.g. uneven idle) before the light came on? Anything like that and you need to idle the car for a long time, about 20-30 mins.
The engine light comes on if you put it under load with air in the system, the above can do this and like you've done changing the fuel filter. the fuel filter will bleed up by turning the ignition on and off with the tap open, just keep doing it until there is no air. I usually leave the outlet on the filter off first and bleed that up first. You still need to let it idle for a fair while after.
The engine light will go out after a while by itself if that is the only problem, no need for holden dealer. I'm not sure if it goes out by time or a number of times turning the ignition on and off. Mine is normally off within an hour or two or three.
Hope that helps

Hillander - There are 3 lights on the dash :-)

1) Engine warning light (it is an engine) - No issues
2) Water trap light (Tap like thingy) - No Issues
3) Fuel Filter light (Petrol pump sitting on dots) -This is the issue

Book says this light is for filter replacement - I have done this

The remaining tip you have stated above may help - I will bleed the system again and see if that works.

If id does I will post reply

Thank you & Cheers Tony

Nope did not work - Light still comes on under load - not so much now

Also just been told that each injector on these common Rails are $1500, making $6000 for the set

Water damage would be expensive - so you wonder why Holden would not have looked into my issue a bit better?

One way to get the light to turn off [ that is if you dont have a scan guage] is to reset the system by disconnecting the battery for several hrs , is a pain in the proverbial as then you need to reset radio/stereo codes etc, and you need to let the car idle for 20+ min so the computer relearns idle speeds etc,,,, not trying to tell you how to suck eggs but you do know the location of ALL the fuel fillters ???

Alloy - Was thinking of disconnecting the battery for a while - did not know about the idling thing. I thought it only had to be disconnected for a little while.

Also I am thinking there may be another filter in the line but I do not know where it would be. Have had a look but have not found anything.

The main canister is under the passenger side on the Chassis rail. If there is another one on this model I definitely would like to know where it is :-)

Pity they do not make a workshop manual - Cheers Tony

Tonyfish , you can sometimes pickup a w/shop manual on the dreaded fleabay , seems they only come on cd though ,
also the canister on the chassis rail is [ on my 2004 RA 3lt turbo diesel auto at least] is only the pre filter / water trap , fuel filter is on underside of diesel primer pump ;-)

Alloy - Ta for that - Have a Flee bay manual for $19.98 delivered on disc :-) for the 07-09 Rodeo & Colarado

When I asked Holden for a full set of Filters & belts for spares, all I got fuel wise, was the one for under the Chassis ????

So now off downstairs for a look under the car :-) As you can see to date, I have not done my own services - It runs out of lease in a few months and I will start the services.

Could have sworn I had studied under that car a fair bit to date....will be a bit of a worry if it is there :-)

I would be really Pd off if my car had stopped because of a fuel filter out in the desert if indeed there is one on my car where you say......very Pd indeed :-)

Will let you know & Cheers

Alloy - Can not see a second filter :-) Might be blind though.

But... Looked at the filter from a different angle and found another couple of sensor wires coming from the top of the filter, they are connected to some type of switch that also has diesel running through it.....so there may be an issue within the filter as yet??? :-)

Pity the elements are so darn expensive $66 Dollars ea - Rip Off.

Cheers Tony

Tonyfish , stop looking under the car , there is only 1 filter on the chassis rail , that filter is the water trap , Lift your bonnett and you will find your fuel primer pump , filter is on underside of the pump ,

Alloy :-)

The bonnet was the first thing to go up - I looked high and low - with a torch & There is no Fuel Filter in there anywhere....bet my bottom dollar :-)

Are you aware that I have a 2007 Model Common Rail? it is not the same setup as the previous model, that's for sure, I drive one of those for work.

Seems there are not too many people out there that may have had this issue, I also posted this on a Rodeo, Colorado & Demax forum.

I will wait for the Manual to come I guess

Thanks & Cheers

Found answer to the problem - This is copied from the Australia4WD Forum - Cheers Tony

I had the same problem with my MY10 DMAX today. Turns out it was the intank fuel pump not working. You can check it by turning the key to ON and you should hear the pump start, it will run for 12 seconds and then turn off. If you can't hear it, then it ain't working. This is probably why you didn't have any luck bleeding the system. You will need to go to page 6E-311 (1927) in your manual to start troubleshooting. Mine was simple, some &**^ left the connector off the fuel pump resistor.

Cheers and good luck.

Thanks for that -Well done finding that in the Manual - Boy it has some info

Yes that is the problem - the pump is getting power and operating but not pumping fuel. I can not bleed the water trap system. Seems the system can draw fuel without the full help of this lift pump?

Also my switch on top of the Fuel filter assembly is leaking fuel through the power connector? Must have a crack in it.

Anyway bid dollars to fix as they have to remove the tank, and with my add on's that is not going to be easy

Cheers Tony
