GunbarrelHighway abandoned section

Hi all, Just been reading about the permits required to travel the Gunbarrel Highway.
Seems to be a bit of confusion on my part. At one point it says no further permits are being issued to travel the abandoned sections and at another area it says permits will be issued if certain conditions are met which I have no problems with.
I rang the the people who issue the permits and even they were not sure what was going on. Has any one obtained a permit to travel the abandoned section in recent times ?

Hi Al
I have just opened up the section for permits on the DIA site and it is as it has been before. I could not see that they are not issuing permits. The only thing that they require is that there is a minimum of 2 and maximum of 5 vehicles in any group and you must carry means of communications - eg HF Radio or Sat Phone. Because these permits have to be approved from the various Communities, they are not a computer generated approval and can take up to 3 weeks to get you approval back.

I have this helps you out.

Cheers

It's business as usual at the WA DIA. The application is web based but the return is anything up to 3 weeks or so as Stephen has outlined above. I had permits for travel this June and completed the trip in the first week of June. Good country although heavily corrugated in the ealy stages along the Rawlinson Range.

Cheers Mick
