Hi all,

What's the best way to do a flush on a petrol engine at oil change time?

Years ago I bought a 4L pack of Mobil (I think) Engine Flush, put it all into the sump of a VK Commodore after draining the oil and ran the engine. In about 30 secs there was white smoke billowing from the exhaust. So I haven't tried it since. I'm also not convinced that the Wynns stuff does much. So that's why I'm asking.

Why do you want to flush the engine?
If I had to I would suggest buying some very cheap engine oil and use it to change the old oil, drive the car for a couple of hours and then again change the oil & filter with a better quality motor oil. This way you keep unecessary additives out of the engine.

I can only guess you want to flush the engine due to sludge in the oil. Be carefull as if this is the case the sludge is due to engine wear, as combustion gasses leak past the piston rings and into the sump causing the sludge. As this happens carbon builds up around the ring groves and around the top of the pistons and to degree takes up some of the wear. If you flush the engine this can remove some of this carbon and reduce compression and can also lead to oil burn. If the engine is in good condition and you really need to flush for some reason you can use a engine flushing oil.

Just use Penrite oils, the amount of "bad" oil left in your engine just doesnt count you will not notice any extra klm s from flushing - you'll just pay more $$s
