hi, we are looking at putting electronic ignition on our GQ 4.2 lpg/petrol carby and noticed these on Ebay ELECTRONIC IGNITION Pertronix Nissan Patrol GQ TB42 Item number: 300455186529 and we are unsure how good they are, so can anyone comment on them as we have looked into getting a new one and are looking at around just under $500 for just the part.
thanks from chris.

I converted a 186 (red) Holden with electronic ignition years ago. The kit that I used was called Luminition. It worked great. Never did ignition timing again. I don't know if they are still available. They had various types for different distributers and worked on a 'magic eye" princable and did not have any ignition points.

I put a "Lumenition" kit into a Cortina way back in 1977 (blimey, that's 33 years ago!) in order to improve performance and reduce maintenance.
It added about 10kph to the maximum speed in 3rd by presumably eliminating "points bounce" which was just what I wanted to assist with highway overtaking. (Mind you, valve bounce cut in at that point!)
It also totally eliminated points adjustment which is largely due to the "rubbing-block" wearing down on the cam and progressively closing the points gap setting.
In short, I was very satisfied and pleased to see that they are still available. (The Lumenition, not the flamin' Cortina!)

Pertronix certainly have a good name as cost effective electronic ignition for various vehicles. Not sure how
well they work on Nissan's though.
I would have thought $500 is a but expensive though - kits for a carby V8 Rover were less than 100 pounds a little while back.
Before buying I would do a google and see what comes up - may be much cheaper from overseas.

Your best to have a look at the patrol
forum i was looking at the petronix for my sons tb42 and there is a lot of info there if you do a little searching.
Site Link
I ended up getting a pirahna ignition second hand on ebay
Site Link
And that worked very good .A little more to set up but simple.
Petronix are distributed in Aus buy proquip and very helpfull .
Site Link
And get an extended rotor button, will improve the spark, as
the gap in the dizzy to the rotor is too big, you can get a new rotor $90 or $40 exchange from performance ignition will make a lot of difference on lpg.

If you call them they will know what you want, i had one the next day Melb to Syd
The electronic ignition was a vast improvment on lpg over the standard points

Not sure what your paying $500 for.
But on ebay they are $189 from patrolapart.
Site Link
I have also bought parts from them direct not through ebay and found them very good for parts.just phone them direct if you don't like ebay.
And as for the pertronix haven't heard of any problems.

I should have read the patrolapart piece on ebay first. i copied this below.
NEVER CHANGE POINTS AGAIN !!!!
For sale - new Pertronix Ignitor Electronic Ignition conversion to suit Nissan Patrol and Ford Maverick GQ with TB 42 Carby engines, with points type ignition.
***Please note Ad is for original Hall Effect module We can supply Lobe sensing at the same price but are reluctant to do so***
We have 3 Years of experience selling these units and have decided to offer only the Hall effect unit for sale.
Last year we had many Lobe sensing units returned and decided to return to selling the original Hall effect type.
We have found these to be the most stable and reliable type and in our opinion the 10 minutes extra fit time is easily offset by the added reliability and stability..

For what it's worth I removed the points and went electronic after moving down to
Perth many years ago - seems it didn't like running around the city. Has not caused any problems and has now been fitted for 10yrs. It also does not get used around the city or suburbs anymore as I have a small car to do that so maybe they might not be so good if you are doing stop-start running over small distances. $500 seems an awful lot of money though - I think you can do a lot better than that. rgds
