hi everyone. can someone tell me the secret to stop the harmonic balancer leaking on my 1hz diesel? the motor was rebuilt, with turbo rod's and pistons, about 6 month's ago. after a month or so the harmonic balancer seal started leaking. so i went back to the rebuilder and he sold the shop, but were happy to give me the tools to undo the balancer. so, i put a new balancer and seal in and after a week it's leaking again. i have now bought a new toyota seal, at $29 , i'am about to have another go. is there one or two seals in the casing,do i need to put toyota's silastic in there? any advice would be appreciated as me and the 80 series are off to the s.a. outback and midnorth of w.a. next week. thank you ,all.

Hi John,
When you removed the unit did you check to to see if the shaft was damaged and or the shaft was the correct size, not ground to remove any grooves etc. also was the seal put in the correct way. Any of these could be a contributing factor.
Did you check the seal for any cuts?
Ian

I meant the seal surface of the harmonic balancer was it a new H/B (Had a mental block L.O.L)

Hi John

As above sometimes the seal will leave a groove in the shaft if so you will need a speede sleave, but i have made them work by not putting the seal in as much to position it on the shaft in a different position

i have yet to do a 1HZ but if like others it is possible to have oil seep out from the shaft and balancer, i have had it happen a few times and the oil was coming from the retaining bolt and not the seal yet i thought it was the seal ......
I used (from memory) a smear of "ultra blue" on the end that mates with the crank face and that stopped it ..............

Since when does selling the shop allow the rebuilder to get out of his warranty obligations?

Did you lubricate the seal lip and the the flange that the seal runs on? If not the seal will `burn`and subsequently leak. Regards G.T.

hi all. thank's to everyone who has tried to help me. i will try to remember all of the replied questions. the balancer i put on myself was new and only needed a little tap to put it in the original place, then we done the bolt up to around 320lb.the seal was replaced with a new one and we put grease on the outer side of the balancer. the seal was tapped in, but, with no lube or silastic on the outerside. we didn't check to see if the inside of the casing was scarred where the seal sit"s. the oil is coming from between the balancer and the cover, there is no oil in the front of the balancer where the bolt is. the oil is behind the balancer. i don't know how the rebuilder gets away with selling his business with no guarantee. i would rather trust another mate, who is pretty switched, to fix it now. i've had nothing but problems with businesses recond or supplying part's for the rebuild. gearbox recond. $3200 and taken back because it was jammed in gear, then, sent back twice as it wouldn't change back from 4th or 5th into 3rd. after 7 day's back at the rebuilder and another $850 more, it is in my driveway. the turbo kit was supplied by another reputable diesel company and had problems with that. here's a tip for anyone who likes to flex the chassis on there 80 series, don't buy a radiator with copper tank's, use a radiator with plastic tank's as i've had issues with the radiator aswell. go plastic tank's,the jap's don't install them because they are cheaper, they have more flex so they don't leak as easily. solder doesn't stretch thus causing leakage. now to the person who replied with a suggestion about replacing the 'o' ring on the balancer/seal. could you supply me with more details, as no one has said there is an 'o' ring anywhere near the seal/balancer, yor input would be appreciated, and any other members. thank's to all. i'm sorry for not replying individually with names. john.
