Hi all,
Not being a genius mechanically minded person, I am looking for some advice. Currently my 2.8td GQ patrol is getting some TLC at the mechanic including:
conrod bearings
turbo rebuild
new alternator
new
water pump
etc etc.
Should I be looking at getting the harmonic balancer done also (it's the original) or do they last forever?
I have 280,000km's on the clock.
Thanks,

I agree with skmant.....my last vehicle was a GU patrol 2.8tdi and the only reason that it is my 'last vehicle' is that the harmonic balancer worked loose on the crank. I did a bit of a bodgy job and reconstructed the keyway with a chisel reshaped it a bit and fitted a new key and balancer.....and quickly traded it in. A work of caution....I wish someone had of cautioned me about this.....check torque that Jesus nut on the crank every time you do a major service (ie every 10000km) just to be on the safe side. An engine rebuild is in the vicininity of $15K for the 2.8.

thanks for that. Just picked up
mine this morning with a $7,000 bill. Good news though with new clutch, alternator, conrod bearings, turbo rebuild, timing belt, wate pump etc etc.
I did ask about the harmonic balancer and he said it would be fine. Though I trust my mechanic (or I wouldn't have spent $7K with him) I will ask around at 2 other 4x4 specialist mechanics in
Adelaide and get their thoughts.
Basically getting everything original replaced before we do the Canning in 2012. Our patrol doesn't get used around town which means that I won't have the convience of getting a tow back to the house if something breaks whilst driving to work. 99% chance it will happen out bush.
thanks,
