Damian I suggest you have a look back through some posts re chassis cracking. Seems most cases have been put down to air bags.
The alloy tray will save you weight.

Damien

The posts refered to by Madfisher are only a few days ago and should not be hard to find.

Almost a 'must see'.

Most chassis cracking has been through bad driving rather than air bags.

I have air bags and new suspension on my rodeo and no problems.

I would do a suspension upgrade first and probably a power chip we went with the DP chip.

Other than that they seem to be a pretty sound unit.

I agree with D200Dug Damien - I have an alloy tray and accessories hanging off it everywhere, on top a Homemade slide off Camper - I have a 3" Lift kit, bigger tyres, diff locks, Load assist kit (Air Bags) and have been around Aussie, across the Simpson & on many a rugged track.

I have designed it so most of the weight is between the wheelbases - I am over GVM when I travel up to about 300kg when fully loaded.

Chassis is still good and never been an issue - I also tow a large boat on the black stuff.

So how you drive, how you load and what you tow will be the deciding factor

Cheers Tony

hi damian jilley
i think before you proceed with mods
imho you should read thread 81850
although it's not about dmax /rodeo there is a message in it for all who do mods on new vehiclesirrespective of the brand

beware the consequences that may or can unfold
and the legallities you can end up fighting
note::
i am not scare mungering just taking a commonsense perspective of the imfo in that thread detail
make of what you choose to but its worth reading
just the same there is a message in it for all imho
cheer

Hi Damien,

I personally dont like alloy trays as they arent as strong as steel trays (although not all steel trays are built equal) and when Ive loaded the alloy tray up with wood or water, they haven't taken the weight over the years.

The last alloy tray I had took 2 years to elongate the bolt holes and fall apart carrying regular weights of around 700-800kg but I could over 10 years doing the same work with a steel tray

It really comes down to your intended use and amount of weight you regularly put on it. Most campers could get away with alloy and have the weight reduction as a bonus

On the other hand an alloy tray wont rust like steel can and if you do a lot of coastal trips or live near the sea it could sway your decision to alloy.

At the end of the day its horses for courses

Cheers Wilko
