Gidday Sir kev

i wasn't exactly sure where in Queensland Chinchilla was so I just googled it ... that video on the website is amazing. I look at a lot of town and regional websites as I dream my way around Australia and I have never seen anything like that. I understand that you work in local government or something there well if you know any of the people responsible for that tell 'em i was almost off to start packing!

Cheers

great clip Kev, that's a great reason why rain is a good thing, we have had 67mm in the last 48 hours and the creeks are running a banker again, the kids just made it home from school yesterday afternoon with the creeks on the rise. I would almost say we could have done without it ,but seeing to many dry times recently i'm not quite game to. The rain has brought the cold with it though, we could do without that. It's only abought 12 degrees at the moment.
I was out Walgett way last week and there is some fantastic crops ,they need it to stay dry out there for a while so they can get there crops off and keep on top of their grasshoppers.
Here in north west N.S.W we are having one of the best seasons i have ever seen, the clover is up to the running boards on the hilux, i feel sorry for other parts of the country that haven't got it as good, but we have had it pretty tough for a while so we can't help but smile.
Cheers John.

Gidday

sadly, as you probably know, it is too late for many of WA's grain growers. In some areas they won't even bother putting the header in to the paddock. I was listening to an ABC rural program today about how good it is in Victoria for their grain growers. Mind you they have had a lot to deal with over the last decade. It was good to hear one say that he had nothing to worry about as far as his crop was concerned ... except for frost and locusts. Good luck to 'em.

Cheers

A bit our way would still be better than nothing. Too late for the crops, but may put some water in the dams. Farmers around here have sacrificed their crops into hay.

Hi Kym

Our son is on my old family farm not far from here - a hot day last Saturday turned what was left brown. We still have mainly green, but nothing to feed our sheep who have struggled all winter. Any showers while the green is still here will be of benefit. Just when we need the money more than ever, we are going to have to sell about half our sheep at well below cost - good breeders on the flooded meat market. Very depressing and distressing. Are you farming?

Hi Joe n Mel

We used to drive through Gnowangerup every weekend when we were farming south of Jerramungup. A drought (but not his bad) really set us back the first year. Got out of it a few years ago and hear they've had it pretty good ever since.

It was pretty dry in the east last year when we were out touring; much of inland NSW all very short wheat crops that we wouldn't consider worth harvesting - but no livestock in sight. North central Qld looking good after the early year water that went through the channel country - but hardly any livestock. They said after a few bad years now they finally had the grass, the banks wouldn't finance them for replacing the livestock.

I hope you're not on a tight schedule. Sit back and enjoy the rain for us.

so you are very familure with Bremer Bay, we sooo love that place, give me a salmon on the line over a barra any day and cooked up fresh you cant beat it......
Hope all goes well for you guys, the worst thing is that most people think that when it does rain all problems are solved, as you say you may have to sell off stock and when things get good the "replacement" for those stock are 3 times the price and and actually hard to get for what you need to breed back up again, you have problems getting seed for next years sowing and the list goes on and of course you dont have the cash flow to buy it ...........
I remember when we had a really dry year on the farm (83 i think) and for weeks we got to see the "southern lights" and the in Jan/Feb we had 13 inches of rain and never saw them again, very strange coincenence ....
Hey notice on the news they have evacuated some propertys in NSW as a dam wall is suspect after heavy rains .....

They are worried about the dam near Tumbarumba. Mannus dam?

Wagga is flooded in areas out near the lake. One of the day cares had to call all the parents as the roads were cut off. It's amazing how many sedans try to go through water, that in some areas was coming up over the bonnet in my Patrol. One would think the barricades across the road may have been an indication the roads were closed. 4wdrives were suppose to be the only ones allowed, and only for a good reason like getting a kid from the childcare.

Rubberneckers are causing more problems than the rain.

Hi Motherhen
I'm not farming, but come from farming stock, both Northampton and Greenough Flats. It's in the blood, so tend to take an interest still.

I'm praying we get a few decent cyclones this year, and they come down inland and fill up our water catchment areas. My hubby & I have 16 acres just out of Geraldton, reliant on ground water, and it's been distressing watching the water level of our well drop dramatically the past few years. I'm just glad we're living in town.

Fingers crossed you get a decent price for your stock, and that things improve next year so you are able to move forward again.

John Farnham's song "Wait for Rain" is my theme song at the moment....

Hi all,

We have had enough rain in Parkes (till after harvest) but its the wind that will drop the crops.

Thatll be right, 1st good crop in a decade to have the wind blow it and the grasshoppers eat it, Such is life ; )

Cheers Wilko

hi
its never in the bank 'til it's in the bin and sold
spoken to 3 different people in last 2 weeks from wa farming areas across the state and they are saying it's even worse than 1980
rain gives hope and regenerates plant growth
but a long dry creates nothingand destroys all plant life just look at the nullarbor plain and destroys things that live off the land in various ways
so imho rain is the revivor but not without its problems when it gets to flood levels far too many properties have been developed in flood risk areas over the years by money hungry developers who only care about the dollar
not whats going to happen when a big wet arrives
w'a is really suffering badly this year but eventually the rain same as whats taking place in some of the eastern states areas this year will come again but when is the 64 dollar question

and its the insuring period ahead which is the reall challenge trying to survive through an unknown drought period and or flooding
having come from and endured many years on the land my heart goes out to all involved
if only we knew ??? the weather goes in in cycles with many variations in temps and wets and drys as old records keep getting broken and/or equalled the drys and wets have all been in aus before its nothing new just an ever on-going pattern
try and keep positive thats all one can do
cheers
