Anyone driven their Nissan x-trail to
Cape York (and back!)? Will be towing an off road Adventure trailer? planning for June/July 2011
Any advice or
routes welcomed. Do not intend to do any "serious" off road, but know what is serious to one is not always serious to another.

D&G. Go for it. I did the trip in July August 2009 towing a T_Van. No problems. Went to
Weipa and the up the Bypass road. Road conditions were good except for a 20 K stretch above
twin falls. rough but a new road was being cut through from the
Jardine River, so it may be ok by now. plenty of bitumen sections, watch out for signs ( over taking area ahead ) A/t Tiers a must. ran
mine at 18 on the dirt an took it easy on the black top. Same for the T_Van. Best
camp site Loyalty Beach
Seisia. Turn north just before the town. Right on
the beach. Hot showers & powered sites. The
camp site in town is noisy at night with the unloading at the pier. If it you first time like
mine, watch out for signs for DIPS on the road up. They really mean DIPS. Take it easy and have a great trip.

Not a worry. Just stay off the Old Telegraph Track (OTT) which you wouldnt do towing a trailer anyway.
The 2 main roads to
the tip are Peninsula Development Road and
Bamaga Road and most of the sightseeing roads to the left and right will take any 4WD or AWD. Some sections are sealed and the rest is corrugated bull dust - people drive their caravans there (slowly over the corrugations).
There is a souvenier
sign you can buy at
the Croc Tent near
the tip...its says "
Cape York...364,000,000 corrugations thataway" It is very accurate, I felt every one of them.!!!
Your trailer might also limit your ability to see some of the extra special
places along the way - ie
Eliot Falls is divine but the
camp sites have bollards around them which allow a tent to be walked thru but a trailer cannot be driven into place.
How much time are you allowing? - a quickie up and back can be done in less than a week, but a scenic experience would take 2 weeks (from
Cairns). We did a tag-along tour which was full of excellent sites & sights, excellent commentary, excellent inside knowledge and excellent companions and new friendships.

Thanks for the replies - will probably take 3-4 weeks from
Cairns and will have the necessary spares, tyres etc. Just came back from 11000km trip in Western Qld, so looking forward to next year.
Any more recommendations for
camping spots greatly appreciated.
