Hi, I am visiting England in a few months and wondered if it is possible to load maps of England into my Hema5 - preferably the Route 66 part but anything would be useful.
And as a follow up - if it is possible, how do you do it.
Thanks
Nick

gooday,
if you are looking for street maps, it's probably cheaper and easier to buy a cheap GPS (complete with pommie accent) on your arrival in the UK. If looking for toppo maps... sorry... no idea....

Hi Nick,
Not sure about Hemma but did use my Tom Tom with a purchased map down load from theTom Tom web site and it worked great. maybe Hemma has some other country maps that you can down load from the web site for a cost of course. save them onto a SD card and swap the card in your machine or get a card big enough to hold both Australia and UK maps.
Hope this helps

Gday
I bought an AA roads map book and had no trouble finding my way around the country.

Gday again.
I was going to say that you never see anything new if you don't turn off the main road, and take wrong turns. You cant get lost if you are on holidays.

I used a Sat Nav last time I was in England and it certainly didn't stop me getting to accidental interesting
places as it didn't seem able to tell the difference between motorways and country lanes and specialised in country lanes that just stopped in a tangle of blackberries!

Hi Nick,
I used my HN5 to navigate around Italy and the UK back in August/September. You will need the Route 66 Sync app that comes on the CD with your HN5.
you can put the MicroSD card into my PC (with the supplied SD adapter) and the Route 66 SW recognised it. I may have had to register, I can't remember.
Alternately you can just plug the HN5 into your PC with a USB cable, I used that method later when I was reloading the Australian maps but it was much slower as for some reason it would not recognise the HN5 as USB2.0 so was using USB1.1 transfer rates.
You can then go to the Route 66 Store where you will need to download the following:
- Maps/Road Maps/Europe/
United Kingdom (FREE)
- Navigation/Drive and Walk/Europe/
United Kingdom and Ireland (Not free)
The UK&NI drive and walk was about $7 for a month or about $28 for a year.
I used the Western Europe drive and walk because it was the cheapest way to get Italy and the UK navigation (about $11 for the month I think)
NOTE: Getting the maps is not enough, you must also install the drive and walk for the region if you want it to navigate for you!!
I had a little trouble loading them on as the first couple of times the route 66 sync app copied the data but it wasn't recognised by the software on the HN5. I deleted the maps and navigation file, recopied using R66 sync and then it worked. The R66 store remembered that I had bought the drive and walk so don't worry about having to pay for subsequent downloads.
I would recommend making a backup of your SD card to your PC, just copy everything then if you accidentally get creative and delete something you shouldn't then you have the files to fix it up.
Cheers
Alex

Thanks Alex, great information. A couple of weeks ago I tried loading the Route 66 sync app onto my computer from the internet but stopped when it asked for the operating system. I know it's probably given in the handbook but I didn't have time just then to find it. I'll dig out all the paperwork, reload then follow your instructions - many thanks.

I recently loaded Canada maps onto my Hema using the Route 66 Sync app.
I think it cost 40 UK pounds one off cost for the map. (don't know about hire of map by month like Alex talks about). I now own the current version of the Canada road map.
It was slow transfer but all went
well and it worked first time no dramas after the download. The HEMA now has Aust and canadian maps on it and you have to select the approriate map when using them.
I think the Route 66
shop also has updates of maps.

Thanks everyone, I agree that getting a map book or a cheap Sat Nav would be options but having paid a fortune for my Hema5 I would like to use it!
Also, I'm hiring a car at Heathrow so probably wouldn't be able to find a second hand Tom Tom in the airport and the thought of a jet lagged daughter trying to navigate me out of Heathrow using a large scale map book is something I don't want to contemplate!
The comment that you can't get lost when on holiday is true, but I'll also be travelling with a two year old so getting lost is something I would like to reserve for later, not day one.
Once agaion thanks everyone, especially Alex, I knew that the
Forum would have the answers.
Nick
