I consider traveling with a dog very limiting and a friend suggested I take their 3Yr old blue heeler out for a weekend...This family also own its mother.
I couldnt have enjoyed the time better. The dog behaved perfectly, with none of the undesirable traits ive read about and I have found there may be some strong personal benefits from considering traveling more often with this dog.
so as a first step im thinking of a quick tour, ex-
brisbane, 1000K any direction rounding back and staying in the full gambit but preferring state-forests,
recreation areas and other inexpensive stops
ive tried doing a searchs, even with multiple keywords but it comes up too wide or none...
can anyone mention some nice
places to stay??

Good on you taking your friend along - we travel with our two old Jack Russells and wouldnt have it any other way. We never feel restricted as there is always a way around if there is something we want to visit which doesnt allow dogs - sometimes just takes some asking. Having a pair of
well trained, quiet dogs helps heaps as we can easily leave them in the caravan and are often told by others they didnt even realise they were there. We DONT take them into
camping spots that dont allow dogs I hasten to add.
We are currently 8 months into our around Australia trip and have found many fantastic free spots to stop.
Calliope River near
Gladstone is lovely and at the moment its probably as far south as we can get without being rained out. LOL. I am sure others will be able to make suggestiions.
Happy travels and dont forget the doggy bags LOL

Which way do you want to go?
If you go west from Brissy you could try spots like
Mitchell (
Fisherman's Rest just west of
Mitchell) which is a lovely spot.
Eulo is another nice
riverside camp area.
Yowah to do some fossiking has a great
rest area in the heart of town.
Chinchilla wier, Lesley dam out of
Warwick ect ect. All these spots are on two major highways west of Brissy. You could easily go out on one and come back on the other as a round trip.
The book
Camping with Dogs would be a great buy if you plan to
camp with the pooch more often. In my opinion they do not restrict you too much unless you want to go into N.P.
Cheers, Trevor.

We have done two trips "around the block" and had two dogs with us and have never had any real problems. If certain
places do not allow dogs that is their misfortune not ours. There are plenty of
camping spots around without going into national parks. Some national parks are just an excuse not to do anything.
We called into one caravan
park, that wasn't listed and I asked if I could bring our dogs in and the proprietor said OK as long as we didn't have any kids as kids cause more trouble than dogs.
One thing you must watch out for is poison baits. One place we stopped at in W.A. I had to dispose of a dozen baits placed indiscriminately about.

If you wanted to go nth, then you could try Borumba
Deer Park near Imbil (lovely creekside caravan/
camping ground with reasonable fees) or the
dam camp ground at the bottom of the dam, then on to
Inskip Point (near
Rainbow Beach) then to
Gin Gin for a roadside
rest area (noisy but OK) then over the range to the Burnett Highway and sth back toward Brissy that way. Down the Burnett there is a few
camp spots if you want to go this way let me know and I will spell them out for you.
How many days do you intend on being away and what are you driving (and towing if you intend on towing)? This info will help narrow down where you can and can't go also.
Cheers, Trevor.

We are about to set off in the van for several months with the dog on board. We have purchased a copy of the traveller's bible "
Camp 5". It has 3500 sites around Australia which includes all sites that will accept dogs. Many sites are free and some have a small fee. Have spoken to others who have used the book and they found it to very helpful.
Enjoy the extra company that the pouch gives us all.

Roberttbruce,
I would suggest that you have a look at the
Land Rover Club of ACT(click here) they have an excellent
camping guide that you can access on line for free, or purchase the CD, when you pick a state, go to the far right column and you will find the pet friendly
camping locations.
Click on the site an it will give you all the details, co[ordinates ad directions, including photos.
Good luck

Hi Tony,
Not sure if you or anyone else realises but there is a similar search function on the
places tab on this website.
Try this to see the free camps that are pet friendly Australia wide. There is many other filter functions in the same area of this website so anyone wanting to search for a particular type of camp/
park ect "SEEK and you shall FIND" (to coin a phrase from another
well known website hehe).
Hope this helps.
