Digital Mapping

I know this subject has come up here quite a lot over the past, but my question is: how much better is Raster NatMap 2008 than the 2005 edition. Also what would be better digital mapping to buy, I have been using the NatMap 2005 for some years now. So is there a mapping system out there better than NatMap? thanks all for any input cheers

Hi Bruce, I've been using a test copy of the Natmap 1:100k mosaic for 18 months. It defaults to the 1:250k series in areas (remote areas) with no 1:100k cover.

It's very friendly to use as it's a mosaic (2 DVDs for all Oz) and is now out as a commercial product at a very cheap $40.

There's nothing wrong with the 1;250k series but I never use them anymore in favour of the 1:100k's.

See http://www.abcmaps.com.au/Image%20Pages/100k%20DVD.htm

Hi John,

I bought this today and it looks good.

However, is there somewhere I can get the .map files to use this with OziExplorer?

I checked the Ozi website and they do not seem to be there.

Thanks

Pete

John I noticed many of the 100k maps were quite old. This can be good and bad. its good for finding older stuff left off of newer maps but not all the roads are up to date.

For instance i travelled from Perenjori to Rothsay taking the old Rothsay road. It was shown on the 100k map as a main road where it actually is a 4wd track now and a new road has been put in. It was usufull for finding a few old wells and mines though.

i found my self switching between the 2

Re the date of the maps comprising the mosaic, I can only agree Dave. It looks like 1:100k series aren't updated regularly. Maybe it why they released it at such a cheap price. On the other hand I've found them very accurate and useful for topo detail.

Re the .map files Pete, I have to admit that I'm a tech dinosaur but the website above indicates that the product doesn't use .map files as it's in .ecw format. Someone else loaded them up for me.

However if you go to 'help' in Ozi, there is a section on importing .ecw files.

Others; advice pls.

Cheers.

Also, it has to be said, the 1:250k series also suffers from being outdated on the manmade features sheet by sheet.

If you've got both, plus the various 1:50k series (covering much less of Oz) it's easy to flick between them on Ozi for best effect.

I stand behind my original observation; if you don't want to do anything dollarwise; just spend the $40. Great value.

Cheers.

H All,
I am unable to find a retailer in NT who will help me out in purchasing the $40 (100k version) shown in the link above. Anyone know where I can purchase this product without having to pay the markup & postage some online stores want for this product? for example... one map shop in Adelaide wants $45 PLUS $9.95 postage and handling. Others charge even more... for what is supposed to retail for $40.

Hi Fred, it's interesting that the Geoscience people that put the product out don't seem to have it on their website (or at least I can't find it).

They seem to have offshored it to the on-line retailers and maybe the map shops. There must be a map shop in Darwin that you can ask?

If you have to source on-line, there will be no escaping mailing costs for such a low cost item. :-(

On the plus side however, I would have prev. have bet that the price would have been at least as high as for the 1:250k series or higher. This has to be the digital map bargain of the decade.

Cheers.

Fred,

Ask Adele in the EO Shop as I am sure they price match.

Cheers Kev

G'day fellas, I purchased the Natmap Raster 2008 series on 2 DVD'S, in August 2008 before I went to W.A. for the princely sum of $99.00 + $2.50 postage from Australian Government Geoscience in Canberra. Whilst the release is 2008, in essence, some of the maps (in fact quite a good number of them) dated back to 2003,2004, and some even earlier. This indicates to me that they have not been updated since those dates, but I could very well be wrong. Whilst I was over there, (W.A.) I travelled along roads which were not on the map, in convoy with a few other guys, one whom was a W.A. native, and knew the roads reasonably well. We stopped to look at the maps on the Laptop, and lo and behold, the road we were travelling along wasn't on the screen. I said to my mate, 'must be a new or reasonably new road.' Pig's a*#se he said. It's been here for over 20 years that I know of. So obviously some errors do get through. Another example is of the new car navigation system I had, which had also been updated with the very latest mapping system. Again, I was travelling along a road, when this persistent voice kept telling me to do a u-turn and travel back from whence I had come to get back on the road. The screen showed I was not on a road, but my eyes told me otherwise. I pulled out a 1977 copy of Readers Digest "Atlas of Australia" and it showed me exactly where I was. (This was also compiled be Geoscience Australia, and had roads marked on it which were not on the supposed Natmap Raster Series). So just goes to show that no one mapping system can be relied on, but a good selection of all will undoubtedly help, even old ones. Happy camping.

Hi All,
did another search this morning and found MapTrax. They sell the 2010 raster maps edition with the 100k maps for $40 plus the $4.55 postage as per the suppliers instructions instead of the $45 (or more) plus $9.95 to $19.95 postage others are asking. So have ordered from MapTrax.
