Sorry,
This really not the right forum for this but as a member I am passing on to others.

There seems to be a new scam happening at the moment (I just ot one) where some one with a foreign accent) rings you up saying there is something wrong with your PC.

The line they use is a bit different (I ahve looked in the web) but in th end they are trying to sell you something or worse as they want to take over control of your PC.

I was told they were from Microsoft. This made me immediately suspicious as MS would not help any one - at least by a phone call.

I basically told them I was not interested - they were not polite - they said "then go an buy another PC". Next time they call I wan't be either.

If you search the WEB you will find a lot of hits on this,

Any way be warned.

Hi Richard,

I had a similar experience. My guys were from the windows support team and were responding to the error messages they re receiving. Smelling a rat I lead them on until they wanted me to logon to a particular website. At his point I asked them to send me an email. Haven't heard a thing since.

Cheers

Sounds like I am the last to know this :)

My son told me he got one a couple of weeks ago and played a long with them for awhile until they got sick of it and hung up.

Unfortunately a number of people will get caught by this scam.

Hi Richard,
Yes, I think you may be one of the last but you weren't fooled.! My computer, helper told me that many have been hooked..When I told him this phone call had come in . He replied with " Please don't tell me you fell for it!" , to which I answered NO!
Truely, I don't know how these people can sleep at night! Good on ya for putting out the alert.
Take care.
Bye Ma.

Yep, I got a 'phone call two weeks ago from some bird with a Filipino accent claiming to be from the "Windows Help Desk" she reckoned my computer was infected by malwares, initially I was unsure but when she asked me for $75 for three months or bargain price $130 for six months to clear the problem and protect my computer I hung up. BTW I do have good virus protection which she claimed was not doing it's job.

Have not heard of this one before, but as i do not answer the phone if the caller is private or overseas I guess i'm unlikely to. If it's important enough they can leave a message.

My daughter almost got conned by someone in Malaysia. She has a car for sale and this bloke in Malaysia wanted to know her bank details so he could transfer money into her account. After I and a few friends convinced her that it was a scam

A number of people on other forums have reported receiving these calls. There was also a recent media report warning of the scam, and the potential for banking details and password theft.

Check this link out, add it to your favorites, and when you get a suspicious email , a stupid photo etc see if it's listed on this website.

When we were selling our Troopy we had 3 scammers respond. They used text messaging and emails. When we told the first one we ere about to report them along with their messages to the appropriate authorities they disappeared.

They are a darn nuisance.

Hi Bruce, I purchased my JAYCO FINCH, via text and E-MAIL between Tassy and Melbourne, which was no scam. However, I was lucky enough to have my brother in Victoria at the time, and so sent him down to see the lady from whom I was going to buy it from, as I thought at the time, that she thought it was a scam also. On my side of things,I was not going to part with my hard earned money before checking out the goods, Rego details via internet with VicRoads. She wanted a bank cheque or cash. Obviously I couldn't give her either as I was in Launceston, so needed her bank details to deposit cash into her account and so went into a branch of her bank and phoned her from there and got her to talk to the Teller via phone and sorted it out from there including the deposit of funds into her account. She called her bank in Melbourne to confirm funds transfer and then signed over the Rego papers to my brother. Not all are scams, BUT, BEWARE, with good reason. Cheers, Lyndon.

Very true Lyndon, however these were definitely scammers in Malaysia and Singapore and wanted to pay by Pay pal only, even told us how to open an account. Usual business of getting an agent to pick up vehicle to ship it to their country. Once we said payment would be by bank cheque and we expected them to view the vehicle they disappeared.

Provided you have your wits about you it can be quite interesting.

My mum got one of these calls. Pretty funny as she does not have a computer and the only Windows she knows about have glass in them. It sounded like they were a bit confused by that. Then they wanted to sell her one, that got up her nose as she doesn't have one because she does not want one. She worked with them for years and she just thinks they are more trouble than they are worth. She has a mobile that she has turned off until she wants to use it. According to her it is for her convienience not other peoples. No answering machine for the same reason, they will ring back if it is important. Basically an evil woman according to marketing people. Maybe she has the right approach! :-)

I had the call from `Microsoft' and immediately became suspicious and did not follow through

Some years ago when the first Nigerian scam emails started appearing I had saying I was recommended because of my honesty and if I would allow a transfer to my bank account they would give me 10% of $55 million dollars that were sitting idle due to `overinvoicing' in the industry.
Never mind the contradiction that they were supposedly offering me this dodgy deal because I was an honest person. Anyway, I wrote back and said that I would go ahead but I wanted 85%. I got a reply back scolding me for being greedy.
I thought that was pretty good, being scolded by an indignant crook.
