Hi all, Karen and myself have been thinking of doing the Nullarbor over the Xmas holidays, and just recently though that rather than getting to South Aussie and then turn around and coming back we would head up to Alice Springs then from Alice to Leinster then Kalgoorlie and home, Can anybody point me to where I can get some info on the roads between Alice Springs, Leinster and Kalgoorlie. I have looked around and keep coming back to google maps. would like to know if its sealed and if not what condition it maybe in.

Thank You,
Andrew

Hi Andrew

Look at the treks section, Great Central Road. It is dirt from Yulara to Laverton. Expect plenty of heat & dust at that time of year.

hi andrew
you can only edit your post before you send it not after that would be great if we could ???
you are choosing a very hot time to drive through there
the heat and dust /flys may just destroy what could be an enjoyable trip at a more appropiate time for that region
cheers

This book is available in the EO Shop:

The Outback Way

Image Could Not Be Found

It covers The Great Central Road (which is what you want) and the Plenty Highway (just in case you turn right instead of left).

Dirt across the centre and bitumen down the Goldfields Highway from Laverton to Kalgoorlie. BTW the Goldfields Hwy is a great road. Need to watch out for wedged tailed eagles feeding on carion though.

no need to take the bitumen from laverton to Kal I rarely used to

either take the goldfeild discovery trail or make your way to kookynie and down through the goongarrie NP to kal

From the NT border west, the road is pretty good - high speed dirt, well formed, and mostly smooth.
Giles and Tjukirlya (and maybe Warburton) offer air cond cabins for a reasonable price. You might need them that time of year! (Tjukirlya ones are pretty new, Giles ones are a bit shabby, but both places have good kitchens with TV and internet)
If staying at Giles, check out the Met Station in the morning.
Excellent indigenous art gallery at Warburton.
The Petermann Range is very picturesque, esp early in the morning. Pity you're not allowed to get off the road to visit it.
Nice coffee at the Visitors' Centre in Laverton.
Near Kookynie, check out Niagara Dam, built in the late 1890's. Nice camping, esp below the dam - spend a couple of nights.
Just make sure your gear is in top condition - getting stranded out there in summer would be pretty risky. And broken-down vehicles get stripped very quickly.
And you'll need permits from both NT and WA sides. Both free, avail online. Check out the trek notes on this site.

Hi Andrew

So long as you are equipped for remote and rough road travel (conditions vary greatly), it is an most enjoyable drive. Watch out for camels. If you do a search for "Great Central Road" here you will get some recent threads. My Blogs from 2008 has a review of our trip back to WA. The recent threads will tell you about far more places of interest than we found.
