Hi all

Another bird of prey has been brought to me, hopefully someone can let me know what type of bird it is. Obviously I know it is either a kite or a hawk, but I would like to find out what kind.

I have already given it some liquid, as instructed previously by another member, I would assumne that it was just dehydrated, so I will feed and water it for a couple of days then hopefully let it go back to where it should be.

Cheers

Hi

I have tried everything I can but cannot get the image to go into the thread, any suggestions, as I have the photo on my hard drive.

There are two distinct like dark colour large "tears" on the sides of the face under the eyes, with a light coloured face and the rest of the bird is a variety of greys and blacks.

Cheers

Marc,

the image may be too large and will take forever. Try reducing the size of the photo and then upload it into a forum post.

Cheers Mick

G'day Marc,
a lot of falcons actually have the two tear like stains from what i have found in my bird books, but the colour sounds a bit more like the grey nankeen kestral. hope this helps a bit.I'll keep looking though and see what i find.Hope all goes well with the bird.
Cheers.
John.

Hi John

I have emailed the pictures to another member, and he has downsized them for me. I can still not upload them so I have asked him to do so.

Hi Flynnie

Thanks for doing that for me my friend. I have found out from Stuart, an ExploreOz member, and part of the WA Conservation of Raptors, that it is not a Kestral, but a cross between two birds.

Stuart has once again kindly arranged to receive it in Perth, and tomorrow I will get it taken to Kununurra on the mail plane for air transport to Perth. Although you cannot clearly see it, thereis some damage to the right wing.

My brother in law found the raptor running along the road, and brought it to me knowing I may be able to get help on this site, which of course has happened. Thankyou ExploreOz members for once again helping save one of natures beautitful animals.

Cheers

Hi all

I am no longer concerned what kind of bird it is, his/her name is Paruku, the traditional name for this area, and Paruku is now on its way to Kununurra and hopefully tongith down to Perth for vet treatment for an injured wing.

I tried using welding gloves to hold it, and realised that they were not built for birds of prey OUCH.!!!

Hi 3GoBush

I have just shown a picture of a Paragon Falcon to a couple of the Old Men (Elders) and they said that such a bird has never been in this area. That is not to say one may not have wondered in, but it would have a hell of a fight at the moment, as many of the raptors seem to be fighting at the moment.

Whatever it is, it is a fine looking brid of prey (albeit not that impressed to be in a box by the look he's given you). Hope he/she is back in the wild asap. Keep up the good work chaps.

"Paragon Falcon" ????

Did you mean Peregrine Falcon ?

If so, I'm inclined to agree...

Hi Bazooka

H wasn't in a box, that is an old bakery box used to hold a perch up which is attached to the mesh on the other side. It is a mesh pen that I made which is 2metres x 1 metre x 1 metre. he was okay and will be better in a few hours when he gets to Perth.

Hi 3GoBush and Ed

I fail to see the relevance at the moment of what the bird is specifically. The bird is going to vetinary help and that is all that I am concerned about. I totally trust the member that I am sending the bird to, as that member cares for Raptors.

Having googled Peregrine Falcons and read about them, it would be the first one ever in this area, but again, that is possible. We mainly get brown and black falcons apparently, but then I am not an orinthologist.

Hi all

I am pleased to let all know that the raptor is in the hands of trained carers in Perth, is eating and drinking though slightly underweight, and will possible visit a vet on the weekened.

it is definately a brown falcon, the tarsus is too long for either peregrine or black falcon, it has eaten 180g of food since it has been in and there seems to be no limit as to what (she ) can eat. i /we the dugite and i are heading to the vet on saturday for xrays , i can only hope there is no major surgery required .

Hi Stuart

Thanks for that update mate. If you tried to get me on Skype, I was busy with the family having got them a bush turkey today. I know you are a bird carer as well, but bush tucker for the mob is normal.
