We would like to camp a night or two at Aberfeldy Bridge camping area over cup weekend. I know it will be (very) busy, but what are our chances of getting a spot (we will not get there till Saturday evening)?
If no hope there is there anywhere else close by that would be the go?
Thanks in advance

Hi Ian,
I don't like your chances. We camped at Merringtons on Labour Day a couple of years ago and got in on the Friday night. By Saturday morning there was a constant crawl of people looking for sites. There is a lot of camping along the Aberfeldy but it was hit pretty hard in the bushfires I believe and some areas are still not open. I've tried to find out if Merringtons is open but can't see it online.
Good luck.
Lou

I have been to both Merringtons and O'Tooles since the fires - but it was last summer. I don't want to suggest they are definitely open, although I'd be surprised if they are not, but best to check with DSE who manages them.

Ian, i called in at the Aberfeldy Bridge campground last week.

It is a beautiful spot but it is rather small and personally i wouldnt stay there over a long weekend simply because i dont want to see another camp anywhere within sight or sound when i camp!

Driving into the camping grounds there is a small area on your left that would hold a couple of little tents and their owners vehicles then on the far right there is a larger grassed area that would suit a larger group - 4,5 vehicles and tents etc but their are bollards there keeping vehicles off the camping / grassed area. Honestly tho its still a small area and i couldn't imagine camping with another unknown 'group' / tent 1m from my own as id imagine would happen there.

Then up by the toilets there are a few other small flat area's for camping but these spots would be some 50m + away from where one could park their vehicles and also out of sight...

Saturday evening - your dreaming :) Sorry to say but Id expect people to be in there midweek this week just to claim an area for the long weekend.

Travis.
