Hi Guys just back from 21000km trip around Oz with wife and kids and upon a 110000km service the mechanic tells me a rear axle seal requires replacing. This is where it gets confusing. He rings me up and tells me the axle was never installed correctly and the seal was only ever just seated and the axle was never fully inserted into the differential. Now they cannot get the axle all the way back in and had to hack off the bearing and something else they will have to replace and who knows how much labour $ excess. Anyone heard of, or come across this before ?
Please reply if you have or have any advice from previous experience.

I knew I should have kept my 60 series !

I've never heard of that personally, however you could ask at Prado Point to get some specialist help.

Mate i would be asking to look at both and then asking NRMA inspector to look at it! There are a lot of shops out there that are doing the dodgy to drum up business.

Question did you hear any noise from the back end of vehicle?

Like a whirring noise that stays semi constant over the speed range???

if you did then your up for wheel bearings, if it was a whine then it woul dbe diff, if it was a screech then your up for brakes.

I'm no mechanic, but i have being around one closely for a number of years. I do nearly all of my mechanic work because i don't trust too many mechanic's.

Good luck and i hope you get it sorted without costing too much money.

chrs, chris

You may need to check as there was a recall on the 90 series prado relating to the rear axle, mine was subject to this recall which involved replacing the rear axle. It may not have been done or done but not correctly

I had my Prado bearings replaced by Toyota free under the recall as well . Check with toyota to see if yours has been done.

Yes check about the recall....

Oddly I had an issue with my 60 series whilst at the cape... The floating axles where removed on the side of the road 80km south of Bamaga. The mechanic had done a road side repair for a collapsed rear bearing and suggested we leave the axels out to reduce the strain on the temporary repair.

Once in Bamaga they couldn't get the axle back into the diff until they had chamfered the end a bit with the grinder....

Touchwood, I have left my axle issues with the 60 & my 90 series is fine!

Cheers
