The 3 month trip is almost done, only a week to go and we will be home.
The 80 Series blew up on the Cape Leveque road, Kevin from Outback Towing helped into Broome with the 80 on the tray & Van trailing behind. Despite fitting a new genuine timing belt 30k prior the damage was split Timing belt , broken valves & damaged pistons, at 530.000 klm it just wasnt worth sinking any more $ into so picked up a great 2006 105 series at local Toyota joint $10 -15g cheaper than I could find one in Melbourne. Might have wrecked anyone elses holiday but we are stoked!

Anyway on the way back I saw a similar Tilt Tray coming into Port Augusta from Horrocks Pass direction with white 80 series on back & Caravan trailing behind.
Know that feeling. Anyone know the story with that one ???

Im guessing same 'possible' seal failure 'might' occur if you put mineral brake fluid in the synthetic fluid reservoir in another brand car too !!

any info on why it split, 1HZ i assume, i had to replace mine after i purchased it and it was only done a few k's before, the plate that mounts the tensioner was slightly bent from what i assume was on the last fitment they levered it back to release the tension and bent it, only slightly but it caused it to run off center and i did not like the way it "looked" .....
It also had very fine rubber shavings in the plastic cover and that was what made me look for the cause of the rubber "powder" ...

yep thats it.......... mine was not as bad but i think i can see some of the same rubber powder just behind it, thats what made me start looking ...
So glad i got to mine before it stuffed it all ..... it is worth the effort to check it before a long trip as it is one thing you cant fix on the side of the road....
Cheers, thx for the pic

Wow, what did your mechanic say when you arrived and showed him this?
That is just terrible work, and I am sure he would have known you were remote travelling etc.
If any of my mechs did anything like that, they would not be able to sit down for a week, and would foot the bill themselves.
I would never let anything like that get out the bay, let alone out the door.

The 1HZ has timing gears to the injection pump and a rubber belt for the camshaft.

Did someone say "Another" , geezus 530,000KMs later, are you joking.? This thread should have read "Another 80 Series passes the half million mark..!"

Find me a 4WD anywhere as reliable as the 80 series..? Arguably Toyota should have perhaps kept the 80 series in production today but with a simple refined diesel engine, they would still sell.

Storm in a tea cup.
Whats that noise I can hear?
Oh, Tic, Tic, Tic, Tic, that's right, another Nissan 3 lt.

"Find me a 4WD anywhere as reliable as the 80 series..?"
I've got nothing. China wanted it, ended up building their Great Wall.

Nitta,
Why would you think I'm the troll.
I didn't post a thread called "another 80 Series Blew Up"

Unless of cause you don't understand what a troll is.
Then again, A mate often says" It takes One to Know One"

Have a good one mate.

80s are great vehicles but theres no denying the facts. The youngest one is at least 12 years old now

they are not anzac soldiers, age shall weary them
