Hey All
My hubbie and I are planning a
camping trip throughout qld and would like other members opinions or ideas on some good spots. Have bought all the
camping books....but sometimes is good to get fellow campers experience on some good spots. We have no set plan as yet but are looking at starting down the bottom and heading as far as
Cairns. Keen on both Coastal and inland
camping. We are totally self sufficient so does not have to have facilities....though sometimes would be nice.
Happy travelling
Denise

G'day Denise.
Like many others I could give you information on a vast number of "good
camping spots" in Qld.
But unfortunately due to both local govt. attitudes to
free camping and the garbage and general vandalism done by so many irresponsible people these days I am very reluctant to give out this sort of information.
I am not doubting your bona fides for one moment, but I am sure you would realise the situation.
My best advise is to simply travel using the map as a general guide. When passing through a smaller town which looks to be an interesting area, drop into the local pub, have a drink (doesn't have to be alcoholic) and see if you can strike up a conversation.
Gradually bring it round to fishing, sightseeing,
bush camping etc. You will be amazed by the responses you get if your attitude is deemed ok.
This has worked for us for years, but a side benefit is you begin to develop your own intuition on good and not so
places.
Best of travels to you.
mike

Hi Mike
Not actually looking for
free camping....looking mostly at national parks. Have just found some better
places are those with less amenities. I totally agree that there are some out there that ruin it for the rest of us. Have always practised the rule....if we brought it in, to take it out.
Happy
Camping

Denise,
There is a
Free camp at the
Chinchilla Weir which has free power and flushing
toilets :) 9km out of town
There is also a
Free Camp at Archers Crossing
Camp Ground near
Chinchilla that has no facilities.
The
Free camp on the Banks of Wallam
Creek at
Bollon is good as is the one on the Banks of the Paroo in
Eulo. The
Free camp on the Moonie River at
Nindigully is another that should not be missed :)
Just a few to get you started :)
Cheers Kev

Thanks for that Kev,
They don't have to be
free camping...quite willing to pay to stay. Have found that quite often the best spots are those out of the way and the fewer facilities the fewer crowds. Am looking forward to exploring more of this great country.
Regards Denise

Denise.
If you are travelling through western qld,
Morven has a tidy
recreation ground &
Isisford has good
bush camping on the banks of the Barcoo river.
Cheers.

Canarvon Gorge is worth the trip IMHO, aswell as Cania Gorge also. there's 4 sections of Canarvon Gorge to explore including the already mentioned above Mt. Moffatt section, so plenty to see and do when out that way. if you don't want to explore all 4 areas, then maybe look at Mt. Moffatt aswell as the main section to explore (pack your walking shoes though). Cania Gorge has
the gorge itself to explore, aswell as nearby Kroombit Tops Nat.
Park with it's crashed
Liberty Bomber plane wreck to visit, i really enjoyed the drive out to Kroombit and back from Cania Gorge Big 4 van
park where we were based.
closer back to
Brisbane, another worth the vist is Girraween Nat.
Park down on the
granite belt, climb The Pyramid and you'll be rewarded with spectacular
views that'll have you forgetting about the climb up you just did...lol. you can also jump over the border and visit
Bald Rock just down the road if you've not explored this area already. both
places just mentioned have some steep walks / climbs up rocks to do, but the
views from the top are spectacular and
well worth the effort to get there.

Kenilworth
Show Grounds - Crows Nest NP - Cania Gorge -
Mareeba - Walkamin - Milla Milla - forgot those ones - all great spots. And if you go to Cania - and have 4wd - make sure to take a day trip to Kroombit Tops to see "Beautiful Betsy" -
well worth the trip. Take your time - my hubby and I did 20,000 k in about 4 months last year - just in the north of Qld - zigzagged a bit between
Cloncurry and Mt Isa - but had some great times - with no plans - just "this sounds good - lets go there"
- best way to travel - great memories.

Hi Denise,
Take a look at
This Site which provides information on
camping in Queensland National Parks and lists them by locality.

We have a heap of
camping books mostly Australia wide but recently I saw and purchased on line a book called "
Camping Guide to Queensland" by Cathy Savage and Craig Lewis, Boiling Billy Publications. Unlike most of the other books it has a lot of off the beaten track fairly cheap or free sites. I think it was worth the about $25 including postage that we paid for it. They also put out a guide to each state. Just thought this may interest you. cheers
