Hi
My mate is looking at a 2001 landcruiser the live axle model, 200,000 kms in top condition, he will be towing a 1.7 ton caravan, are there any problems with this unit can it have a turbo & after cooler fitted with no reliability problems also is the manual gear box OK?
Thanks

Hi Jonl,
A bit more info would be helpful, is it diesel or petrol, I am assuming that it is diesel because of the turbo question, but some people turbo the petrol units as well.

The auto boxes are the best for towing but the manuals are a strong box as well but have been known to have some issues.

If it is a 1HZ diesel, normally aspirated, plenty of people turbo them but they were not built for it so replacement of big end bearings every 100,000 Ks is not only advisable but from what I have read on the subject, mandatory. If you turbo it replace the Big end first up and keep to the services religiously.

Otherwise the units are not only perfect for towing heavy vans etc. but absolutely brilliant at it. Speaking from personal experience.

Cheers, Bruce.

just drive it . He might find it's a bit slower than a turbo . These motors do 3 times that many kms.

Gday...

I had a 2002 non-turbo 4.2 Cruiser diesel standard model (barn doors at rear).
Wouldn't tow the skin off a custard up a hill. It was better than the 3ltr non-turbo HiLux I replaced, but not much better.
I was only towing a Cub Drover off-road camper (probably 1300kg ATM) great on the flat but show it any sort of a rise in the ground and it just slogged.
Used 2nd gear lots on my run from Cann River over to Canberra if you know the hills and it struggled up the Bells line of Road in Blue Mountains.
However, if ya not in any sort of a hurry you get the opportunity to admire the countryside with a non-turbo Cruiser ;-)
I would agree that applying turbo to a 200km motor (even such a strong old donk as these) is fraught with some trade-off in reliability, but if you treat it kind with ya right foot & service religiously it should be a good truck.
As always - this is just my opion from experience.
Cheers
John

The pre 2002 diesels (non factory turbo) were prone to gearbox issues where the spline on the input shaft was too short and would slip on the shaft preventing all drive. After that they were ok.
The Factory TD and the petrols use a different box and are fairly bullet proof.
