just enquiring for a mate with patrol who needs tyres. he does some offroad and is after something with a bit of extra tyre height. the car is standard height but doesnt mind altering mud flaps. will try to convince him to put spacers for springs as a minimum. or would it be a better option to change t 16inch rims. cheers darren adelaide

Hi xr,

Try patrol4x4.com. There is lots of info there on which tyres to use, and not to use.

Not a lot to choose from Darren unless he wishes muddies.

Better to go 16 inch steel rims (usually cheaper) and have second set.

The common 265/75/16 BFG AT give a few mm and of course you can always go 285/75/16 which are harder to drive and will increase fuel use.

Options I use include both 235 & 255/85/16 on 7inch rims which give a real increase (to 30mm) and remain skinny but 255's only available in cooper st unless muddies.

Once you have made tyre choice , if wheels are big , get 15 or 30mm spacers to ensure wheel arch clearances.

Try 285/70x17
Coopers & Mickey T have various At and MT versions.

mate,

in my opinion, if he is looking to try something different he can just go out and buy 285x75x17 but i would go for a cooper st or something similar,,, dont go for those mud tyres like i have STT as they are overkill....
STT are lucky to get 40thou kms..
I would go BFG actually...... BREN-TON is up to 70thou kms and still has 40% to go/....
285's will mean he will have to cut his front mudflaps in half ( as in the side half not the bottom half...)...
The rear flaps will be fine..

You dont have to cut your front flaps.
There is a 90deg angle moulding on the front flaps that mounts the bottom of the flap and holds it away from the body. Cut a 12 to 15mm section from this to shorten it and rejoin with some aluminium angle and self tappers. This pulls the flap in closer to the body.

I have BFG 285/70/17s.....2" lift castor corection bushes and no rubbing.
