Hi Axle,

Not claiming to be an expert on oils (or anything else for that matter......lol) just a burnt out old mechanic, but I am sure I read an article somewhere recently in which the author claimed that the further apart the winter (W) number and the higher number were the more of some additive the manufacturer needed to use and as a result the shorter the time the oil would need to start to "break down" and loose its lubricity.
Now of course, like everything else, progress is most probably being made in the formula for lube oil, well let's hope so anyway.
The stuff I have been using lately is Penrite HPR 20W-60. Switched over from BP C6 Global for no other reason than availability (job change....(;-)))) and after about 5 oil changes I reduced the change period from 10000 to 5000 klm because of increased consumption and general "sootyness" of oil.
Just my experience.

Gday
I think some mowers are more technical than a Bedford , especially a J3.

I suggest you guys do the tutorial on this site.

http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/cms/

I think that you will no longer use heavy oils that are above the manufacturers recommendation.
I used to use HPR30 (30-60) until I learned it did no good at all. I went back to 20/50 and now back to 15/40 and the oil consumption did not change on my 92 Range Rover with 194KK.
I am now going to go to 10/40 semi synthetic.

Yep - after reading the above link I am now using 5W50 Mobil 1 in my 100 series TD - better protection at start-up and although a bit thicker at operating temperatures than it should be it will protect the engine a bit better if it gets a bit hot working on the beach or in slow 4wd terrain (it has 250000ks on it)

Yeah, spot on Phil, that's the article I couldn't think of. Viscosity Index Improvers were the little suckers I was trying to think of that get "used up".
I am going back to a 15w-40 oil of some brand. Or if I get lucky and win Lotto tonight a full synthetic.........lol

Drew, do you mind telling how long you have been using Mobil 1 in your 100 TD?
Has the oil pressure or consumption changed at all?
Not just morbid curiosity, I am re-powering my 1HZ with a 1HD-FT and was thinking of using a full synthetic but not sure if there might be any long term nasties apart from the harm to my wallet.....lol

theres no point in using the full synthetics unless you are going to fit the proper filtration system and then sample your oil to get the longer life to justify the cost, then the sampling cost overtakes the saving/advantage.
Its really no different in the short term using a full synthetic for 10000ks or suitable mineral oil for the same distance.

My 100TD has 210000k on it and I have sampled it every 6 months or so at 10000ks on the oil (ordinary old 15/40) and the samples have ALL come back well within spec for soot etc etc.

Pop,
You're changing from a dirty indirect diesel to a cleaner direct injection motor - so it will take twice as long for the oil to go sooty. So a sythetic can be used for longer intervals. But I think synthetics are a waste of time on these diesels - they last forever on mineral oils.

G'day Pop
Have only been using it for the past 10000k's - after reading Bob is the Oil Guy. My Dad has used it in all his past and present cars (and Honda generator) - including a new Hilux TD, 80 Series 1HZ, Subaru Forrester... He worked with marine diesel engines and the company changed to Delvac 1 in all their marine engines - at a considerable expense for the oil, but a much larger saving in engine re-builds / servicing etc... He is a total scrooge - so fo him to use it - it must be worth it!!!

No - the oil consumption or pressure havent changed in my 100 TD - and speaking to Dad - he hasnt noticed any change in any of his cars.

I was going to do the same as you with my 80 series - but sold it and got the 100 - (I now wish I hade done the engine conversion) - had I gone ahead with it I would have definantly used Mobil 1 - 5W50 or 5W40.
Regards
Drew

I have been using Penrite HPR15 Diesel which now is 15w -50.

It says on the label the extra 10 gives added protection with the oil not thinning so quickly.

Over 70,00k I have never ever added oil between changes, which are usually at about 7000k intervals
50,000 of this has been towing a large van
Vehicle is a 100ser 1HD-FTE.

"the extra 10 gives added protection with the oil not thinning so quickly"

Gday Graham,
With all due respect, that''s stupid marketing rubbish. Hopefully it won't harm your motor, but definitely won't benefit it.
On modern motors its good for oil to be thin - it flows better and gets around quicker on startup.

Even in Queensland, you should never need a thicker oil than 40 weight with your motor. And 1HD-FTE motors don't use oil. Come to think of it my previous Landcruisers have never used oil.

I really dont care Only read it cos someone mentioned it.

The motor has done 80,000 on the oli and is still running fine.

It was 15w40 but has been "uprated"?????

It also says on the container it is suitable for several viscocity rated engines including 15w40 etc.
