Hi Everyone,
Could anyone provide me with some info regarding towing vehicle.
I have recently purchased a Jayco Heritage van with a GTM weight of 2217kg.
I am looking at a Nissan Patrol as a tow vehicle but not sure wether to go petrol /gas (considering a 4.5lt) or go diesel 4.2lt or maybe 3lt ( bit worried about repretation of the 3lt ).
A 4.2lt diesel would be the way to go I think but initial cost of vehicle is high.
Can anyone provide advice or alternatives for a tow vehicle.
Many thanks.
Peter.

Peter wait......Both Ford and Holden promise 22 new vehicles in the next 20 months....the press call it a model explosion and I'm sure the others will follow.

Ford are saying a turbo diesel V6 for the Territory and Ford a bringing out a bigger Ranger with a 3.2 TD.

So with all these coming onto the market soon Nissan will not sit idly by nor will Toyota !

Hi Peter,
Either the 4.2 or the 4.5 litre vehicles make excellent tow vehicles.

You have not stated whether you wish to buy new or second hand. Important info when giving advice. With regard to the 3 litre I cannot speak from personal experience but only from a point of view of those posting on the various forums that the 3 litre has some major issues with that particular 3 litre turbo motor.

Apparently they were not an issue in the Navaras but then the Navara is a lighter vehicle.

I am a Landcruiser man myself but the Nissans in the 4.8 V8 petrol, 4.5 petrol and the 4.2 diesel are the pick for longevity.

Perhaps Robin Miller can help you out here as he has 2 petrol Patrols and is very pleased with them. One I know is a V8 and the other may be a 6, or is it one is manual and the other is auto. Either way kee[ your eye on his posts as he is talking from personal experience.

All the best, Bruce.

Peter I should have added the you would be well advised to convert a petrol unit to gas as it will save you a lot of money in a short time. The government is still giving out about $1500 as a subsidy to fit gas.

On the last 80 series Landcruiser petrol I owned the economy on gas, working on dollars per hundred kilometres, was about the same as diesel units. So it is worth the converting, especially here in NSW. I have found that down south in Vic. that gas is cheaper, whereas the further north you go the dearer it gets. Oh, and duel fuel is a must. Nothing worse than running out of gas on a dedicated gas vehicle.

Currently running diesel vehicle but still love the petrol 4.5 for power and smoothness. The just purr along.

Pretty sure Nissan do not have a V8 petrol in Australia, unless its in the newest one coming out shortly?

You seemed to have left out the obvious Patrol in your list Peter , the 4800 which is a better tow vehicle with not only much more torque over a wider band but with bigger brakes and towing capacity as well and less than 4.2 diesel + fuel cost difference.

Hi Peter,

You don't say much about what you are going to be doing (off-road, trip around AUS, weekends away...) or your budget so hard to narrow down too much. But what about the Prado and Pajero, both fine for a 2.2T GTM? Personally I prefer the wagons to dual cabs, they are very practical but they don't ride like the wagons, even after modifying the suspension.

Cheers

Peter, I have recently purchased a new 3.0l CRD Patrol with the understanding that the engine problems are in previous models. I hope I am proven correct. I have just fitted a 3" exhaust and Steinbauer module and now have a vehicle that is brilliant. We tow a van with GTM of just over 2.7t. I think if I had a lighter van I would definately look at the Pajero. Everyone's opinion will differ. I just hope mine led to the right decision.
