Hi,

does anyone know of a good web based trip planner for driving across Australia?
planning to do a trip from Fremantle to Cairns, the quickest way possible.

thanks,
John

Hi John,

Have you tried using Google Maps?

I just gave it a shot and the shortest route is 4,656 km, via the Great Central Road. Looks like it takes you through Kalgoorlie, Leonora, Yulara, Alice Springs, Tennant Creek, Gregory Downs, Croydon, then East to Cairns.

Obviously you'd have to check the suitability of roads for your rig and plan each leg and overnight stops.

A good road atlas may come in handy.

Others on this site may be able to give you other suggestions.

Cheers,

i had considered that route, but then i heard that November is going to be too hot through the GCR, which is a real shame.

I refer to the one on Go see Australia trip planner. It has choice of quickest (bitumen roads where possible) and shortest (incorporates all sorts of tracks and rural roads). It gives the kilometres and a time estimate. It also has the option to put one town as via to check options out. I don't use it as a trip planner, but it does give an idea of distances without spending ages adding up from maps.

I'm with Motherhen on this one. I have just used goseeaustralia to outline a
forthcoming trip to Tassie & find it very useful..........oldbaz.

Whereis works ok too, allowing multiple "via" points along the route.

I would also suggest that pretty anywhere is going to be hot at the proposed time of travel. If you keep speeds down below maximums, allow regular stops and possibly travel the "hotter/remote" sections either in the cooler parts of the day then all should be doable.
