OziExplorerCE

I have put OziCE on a Chinese 6" GPS and have managed to get NatMap 250k.ecw to come up on the screen but as soon as I get a GPS signal I loose the 250k map and it goes to the World.Map. Has anyone seen this problem and can someone help me out please?

Hi
Could be the calibration of the 250K map is incorrect (or you are not in Australia:) If you have the 250K map open in OziCE and then get a sat fix this is the only reason I can think of that would result in it changing to the world map.

Where did you get the 250K map and associated calibration file from? Are you sure it is calibrated correctly - i.e. have you plotted known waypoints on it or something similar?

Also make sure the 250K map is in a folder you have set up in configuration for the program to look. Under File -> Configuration -> Map and Data files ensure folder contianig the 250K map is listed.

Note that some PNDs/PDAs dont like ECW files in OziCe - it may have a haemorage when gps signal arrives ..not sure ?? Do you have any other maps you can try.

Cheers
Greg

HI Greg, the 250k map was being used in Ozi in my EeePC, I tried to change it to a ozf.map file but it did not want to work, kept coming up with "temp file folder is not valid". No I do not have another map to try of my local area and yes I am in Australia.
The configuration seems to be ok. When I turn the GPS on it opens the map where at the gps position I am at, then it disappears and goes to the world map, it seems to be pretty accurate. Thanks for your help Greg.

What happens when you manually reload the 250K map?

For a test delete the world map (make back up copy if you wish) and see what happens then.

Also what version of OziCe are you using.

Cheers

Same thing when I manually reload. I tried to delete the world map from the Map File but to no avail, have to look into that one a bit more, thanks

Weird that the world map was causing this problem all by itself - proceed with caution.

Greg, maybe because the World map was ozf file and the natmap is a ecw file

Hi

Don’t think so – I have several ecw files on my HN5 and never get to see the world map. Difficult to diagnose from here. I have never seen the same problem with the same solution. I would just suggest you make sure all is sweet with the 250K map. If it’s showing you in the right spot on the map then I can only assume it’s OK.

Happy travels.

Cheers

Hi Bruce,

Sounds to me more like a problem with your settings for the "load map with more detail" feature. I haven't used Ozi CE in awhile, but remember it having a feature to load the map with most detail for an area. So for some reason your unit thinks the World map has more detail than the 250K. Have a look in the settings for this feature.

As you map only changes when you get the GPS fix, i'd say it's something to do with this.

cheers,

Nick

Hi

This is very unlikely to be the problem. In OziExplorer "More detail" is based on metres per pixel. The World Map is 18,975 m/pixel and the 250K map is ~30m/pixel....so the program wouldn’t be picking the world map as more detailed.

Based on limited information provided so far I am pretty sure the issue relates to the 250K map not being calibrated correctly. When Ozi gets a gps fix it figures the only map available on the unit at the location is the World Map. The incorrect 250K calibration makes it plot somewhere other than Australia.

Maybe if you open the 250K map in OziCe – (leave GPS off) and mark a waypoint – provide us with coordinates of the waypoint – that will aid in determining if the map is calibrated correctly or not.

Other test would be to with gps on (and world map loaded) mark a waypoint at your position as indicated by GPS. Then turn off the gps, load the 250K map and see if the waypoint plots on the 250K map in the correct location.

Cheers
Greg

Hi Isuzumu
Maybe 250k map is in a differant folder and OCE doesnt know where to look. Make sure in config. Map data files you have the correct folders ticked. jl

Hi
Apparently Bruce has fixed his problem. Not sure why the problem existed in the first place. I also suggested he check configuration (see above posts) though it didnt seem to be the problem as the 250Kmap was already loaded (OziEx didnt need to look for it)....but could be wrong on that one. Having the configuration set correctly would certainly eliminate the possibility.

Cheers

I must state frirom the outset that I have only limited experience with CE but I have learnt this. I had a similar issue in that

CE was reverting to another map even when I had the map loaded that I wished to use.........at that stage the maps were on the SD card in their default file name as they were obtained/purchased and loaded

The map I wanted displayed was natmap at 250K

The map CE kept reverting to was at 100K...This happened sometimes in minutes sometime longer but always eventually happening!.......I did have the load detailed map unticked...but still the device kept defaulting to the first listed on the card (the 100k )

What I discovered was that CE treats the first loaded map on the data base as the default and loads accordingly......what I did was to rename the map files like this.....in the order I chose to list them on the SD card as i wanted

1 250K natmaps
2 100K Kimberley
3 100K Pilbara
4 100K geology (Gregs maps)

In that way the map I wanted as my default was listed first on the SD card and remained stable.......I changed the maps around in different orders and it worked fine whatever was listed as # 1 and so on worked fine

I retained the world map and I might ad that either in ECW or Oz3 formay there was no issues

Hope that helps

Cheers

your timing is soooo good, we have been "exploring" around Lawn Hill, Adels Grove, Doomadgee and Kingfisher and "learning" how to use the program, it is doing EXACTLY the same thing, world map first up and would only stay on the other maps for a few mins and then revert back ....... peeing me off to the max, problem is i need the "world map" for some visual details so i cant deleat it...
Other problem is i am not very good at doing this "changing" files stuff but i am going to try my best now i know what the problem is....

Thanks

TO RENAME THE FILES

Connect the device to a computer with USB cable
Double click on My Computer
Find the device
Double Click
Find the data file double click
Find the maps file double click (I think from memory it is in data and not stand alone)
Either way just find the map folder
Find the map file that you want as the default preferred map
Right click and click on RENAME
The file name will be highlighted.BE CAREFUL
You dont want to change the file name....just want to type in the number 1 in front of the name of the map you want as your preferred default
You should be able to left click just off on the right hand side of the file name to remove the highlighted file name
Now left click in front of the file name and type in the number 1
ENTER
You should now have the file name as it was but with the # 1 in front of it
Do the same for any others 2 etc

Close the folder and reopen and they should be listed in numerical order

Hope I havent missed a step here...it is very straight forward........

thanks for that............... and simple so even i could understand it ....
Dont suppose you know how to get ozice on to my car gps, from what i have been told so far it will work, it is a "Navi Gator" brand, windows CE core 5.0 with SD card and so far i have confirmed it has the "program" on the SD card so it is very possible to do............
Few points so far.....
I have tried to install it on a new SD card from the original disk and changed the "name" to MobileNavigator but wont read it ....
I cant put it on the original card with the "navi" program it is to small .....
I have tried to copy the data from the small disk to the bigger one to see if i can then add ozice but when on the big card it wont read ....
Sorry i not to clued up on this but any tips would be a big help...
Thanks
