Hi Snailbait,
Here's a word of warning. Spinning is addictive and you can never have enough spinning
wheels, (my wife has 5- 3 manual and 2 electric)
Ashford (NZ) are one of the best known makes in Australia and NZ but there are others equally as good. Good
wheels can be found second hand at good prices.
I have found that just about every country town has a spinners group, mainly women, but genrally males are welcome provided they keep quiet.
I do not complain about it as I can go Woodturning while she is spinning.
Disco .

My mother has been spinning Alpaca wool for a few years now. Gives her a supply of yarn when she and Dad travel.

Snailbait, My wife did spinning when we were in the country. She had a "traveller" spinning wheel as the group that she was in held a spinning night at a different person's house each week and it was easy to place in the car. You need to use a specific type of wool to get the best results. Can't remember what the type was.
Cheers

In the interests of road safety, I must strongly caution against any textile related activities whilst touring.
Only yesterday, I drove past one of those illuminated signs on the Gateway Motorway, which specifically warned:
"UNNECESSARY WEAVING CAUSES ACCIDENTS"

But it is necessary. As my old man says, if shes knitting/weaving/whatever, shes not telling him how to drive....

Hi Snailbait
I am sorry, but I have to ask. If knitting when travelling, does the speed change from kmh to knots.
Cheers
