Mine died on Saturday morning about 100km out of Perth on a club trip. Before the ' knockers ' start its 10yrs old clocked 340k km and hadn't missed a beat until now. I'm peed off but I'll be rebuilding the motor over the next few weeks as there's still plenty of life left in her yet.

Sorry to hear that Mike. Still 340 ks isn't a bad innings.
Hope the rebuild goes smoothly and leaves enough in the budget to get out and keep enjoying this wonderful country as soon as possible.

Cheers Teza

In regards to being towed, regardless of who is towing or being towed, what are the legalities surrounding this, and how far can you tow by rope/chain/whatever before any other problems, if any, with either vehicle may occur.
Where you towed by rope for the entire 100ks?

G'day Bentaxle, I'm curious to know the circumstances surrounding the sudden death of your Patrol. Was there any angina or fibrilation or was it coronary occlusion.

G'day Bentaxle, I'm asssuming its a diesel and would be interested to know if the catastrophic failure could be traced back to low sulphur diesel. Between 1980 and 1990 I worked a Datsun SD26 in a one tonne flat top towing a tandem 8x5 trailer moving fruit and vegetables. Apart from hoses, belts and filters there were no mechanical problems. Even the exhaust system was the original when I traded it with about 300,000klm on the clock. I have just got myself into a 08 Ford Ranger diesel and are using Flashlube diesel conditioner. Please keep us posted on the postmortem results.

The failure is almost certain to be caused by turbo overboost, I've been adding a mineral 2stroke oil to the fuel for sometime now to compensate for the low sulphur.

Hi....sorry to hear your Patrol has "died". Have you had a satisfactory post mortem yet as I'd love to know what went and why. Also...what club and run were you on as I am an ex member of a good active club here in Perth...which I should probably rejoin.
Cheers

No good Mike but as per the general feeling 340k is pretty good run , I guess its to early to tell what the re-build cost is likely to be but it may yet be less than the cost of a set of injectors for some of the latest hi-tech diesels.

Hi Bucky
Happy birthday for the car.
I did give mine knew spark plugs at 150,000, but the knew automatic ones a dog going down hills and I don't know if I'm going to let it sleep next to the old one much longer unless it starts performing .

To teach it a lesson I am going to take the old one to the Pyrennies this weekend.

Guy's
160,000kms done

Smokes at start up .. for 2-3 minutes.
Misses.

I treat her like the old oiler she is. Just wait a couple of minutes, when she stops smoking, I then drive off
